« on: August 28, 2009, 08:28:42 AM »
Did you guys see this.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/08/28/senate-president-emergency-control-internet/

More power to the pres and government.  Auto manufacturing, banks, health care, now the internet.  This is not just socialist, it is getting to be downright communist.

He and his democrap buddies don't want the people to know what is going on. If his socialist attitude isn't corrected a lot of folks are gonna get really pissed and start screaming for impeachment. People that praise him and the democratic party and those that just want to bash the United States are protected by the Constitution but let someone like Glenn Beck and others that tell the people exactly what's going on and it isn't to the democrats liking and they want to shut it all down. Wants to treat us like mushrooms, keep us in the dark and feed us s#%*!!!!!!!

There really doesn't seem to be a limit to the over-reaching of this government. I guess the next step is that they'll save money on military bases by having the soldiers lodging with civilians without compensation.

Nasty Pelosi will have him out of office before the end of his term any way she can.  Then she will be a self-proclaimed hero for doing it.   Nobody will buy into it.  Even the next history books will have trouble sugar coating what is about to happen.  The "Perfect Storm" as they say.

Technically speaking shutting down the internet is not within the power of anyone in the US I don't think as it's international and even if it shut down in the US it would still exist world wide. If it was shut down here they'd have to also shut down TV, phone and other such as well. Now I reckon that is do able and don't for one moment think it won't be tried in time. I have to think tho that when it happens a shooting war will ensue immediately if it has not already before. I'd not wanna be a politician when that happens cuz I think their expected life span would be pretty short.

Almost sounds like a violation of the Right to Assemble. Didn't Iran cut off the internet recently? I would imagine that even his few "supporters" would take offense to him turning off the internet. I almost think it would be funny if he did.

I know here in detroit we had a black out for days. Couldn't pump gas because of the blackout . Well when the powder came back I went to get gas. The guy told me I couldn't get gas until the satellite from bp in the uk said he could start selling fuel. So that told me they have control over the pumps even when the power is fine.

Gentlemen, If the right to bear arms is restricted, first through registration, then confiscation, all the government has to do is restrict internet access to smash any organized resistance. News will be controlled. The military has practiced civilian control. How will you comunicate with like minded folks?
Hillary once bragged "never let a good crisis go to waste". We are only a crisis away, whether actual or government fabricated, from losing control of our country. We will be labeled as racist, unpatriotic, leftist, extremist, etc. add your own label. "clinging to their bibles and guns"  Remember?
Ask your self how will you respond when the time comes. Will you be misled by the rectoric from the government and give up your guns, or will you make a stand at the front door? Washington is not listening. Time to decide.

Have to go along with Bill on this one. The internet is composed of all our 'puter's hooked together. Just in the U.S. alone there are no doubt over 250 million computers. Now what they can do, and probably will someday, is shut down certain website's. (like this one) They'll pick out the one's that they fear the most, and somehow send out some sort of virus that shuts them down.
And truth be known, right now, with all the protests,9/12 projects, tea party's, and all going on, they probably can't keep up with all the goings on that is flying around the internet. The sad part is, this administration is looking harder at real Americans that just don't like what's going on, than the real terrorists that mean to do real harm. gypsyman

I'm agreeing with both billy and Graybeard in that if the gov't tries to shut down the internet the response will be both immediate and permanently terminal for the party in power - there will never be another dumbocrap in the white house if such a thing were to happen and I think ol nasty herself knows this.

Nasty Pelosi does not have the brains to think out a move on the white house and I think she knows how devastating this would be to the dem party and all she would do is back away from it all so as to save her butt.  Actually, I don't think that would work at all because if such a gov't 'move' were to be made I doubt we would stop revoltin' until we felt certain we no longer faced a threat to our rights from the dems, for many generations to come or hopefully, forever.

The gov't can only shut down a few websites, just like they did in China and Iran, or try and block transmissions from others but they can't get them all.  And, the internet is just the most current technology.  We still have cell phones and telephones, not to mention ham radios and other 'older technology'.  Not all satellites are run by the US and if we can't get access via one satellite we can get it from another.  You must realize that if China and Russia were to learn of such a move by the obamanistas they would be immediately willing to step in and help the peoples of Amerika regain their freedoms.

I firmly believe that if the gov't attempts to shut off communications they will find us in full revolt.  Some of their nonsense we will just not tolerate.

The gov't has their own communications systems that include law enforcement, homeland security, fbi, cia, military, etc.  We really do not need a separate system to effectively counter the gov't's blocking of internet traffic - all we need do is access our local law enforcement office and we have all the access we need through our local leo system.

Let's not forget that in a revolution, we use everything of theirs, vehicles, supply lines, communications, firearms, food, emergency medical systems, everything - on accounta they won't be using it as we will have taken it for our own use.  jmtcw.

I'm glad this is getting in the news. There is a lot that the US government can do to limit the internet's functionality within the US. Most of this would involve influencing private companies.

I haven't read much about it the backlash, but I wonder what the newspapers are saying about this from a first amendment point of view.

The irony in a proposal to  improve the security of the internet by limiting access to it with a type of "kill switch"  is that the "switch" itself invites attention by hackers, who can then use their growing knowledge of the "switch" to make the internet less secure. To paraphrase the fictional Doctor Who, the more sophisticated a security scheme is, the more susceptible it is to defeat by primitive attack.

Especially when you can get them to skip nice for you. The saddest part is the gov has the means to block basically all communication if they want to.

Another option besides CB radio is get a Ham radio license.  You can get a portable Ham radio and can talk for long distances all over the world.  Ham radio is what kept a lot of east Europeans knowledgable about the western world during the cold war.  The government can shut down all land lines also.

Dixie they are very good at blocking transmission of radio waves. They are even better at triangulating a stationary transmitter. We need to work out a underground network of runners and pass the info. by word of mouth.

Most of the worlds dictators have attempted to limit the education and freedom of travel of their subjects. The Democratic parties attemt to ram this health bill down our throats demonstrates that communication can and will defeat these agendas. The drop in the Presidents popularity shows that it works. When the NRA used the politicans records on gun control aginst them in their bids for re-election the powers quickly had laws passed to prohibit this action. But when a politican lies to your face and you have access to the true information their program is defeated.

The way that would block the internet would to suspend ISPs (internet service providers) this is what hooks you personal computer to the internet and other PCs

I would have an educated guess and say this “bill” would give them the right to order ISPs to shut down (in the name of national protection eg: mass uprising could be coordinated through real time commutation or Email thought the internet, Fun fact 243: the real time net commutation is a lot more secure than a mobile phone. )

I once lived in a country that did ban the net (no internet provider in the country) one of the most common way that this was undermine was to sign up to a ISP from a neighbouring country... international calls where expensive.

Another way we communicated was using outdated net systems like a BBS (computers dial to a central computer with more than one phone line and modem to exchange communications... like a dark ages intranet)

I don’t condone braking the law but there are ways around such things (and humanity thirsts of knowledge and to cut that need from someone is cutting a basic need)

Interesting that the people who used the internet to get into power are now apparently looking for ways to stop it being used by others. I could see an alleged "emergency" (see: H1N1) being the excuse for exactly this kind of governmental over-reach.

The latest terriorism thoughts provided, are aimed not at foreign terriorist but at home grown---not necessarily Muslim---terriorist.
It will be mass destruction, not using planes, but attempts at large scale attacks on large scale gatherings. It has been advised by some well known orginizations and well known and respected groups of intelligence services in Europe and middle east, that communication are a vital link for these far reached and yet, not connected groups.
It will be necessary for communications, of all types, to be able too be controlled in such an emergency.

Chappers,

Do you know how to communicate without satelite? useing radio wave? how to locate and destroy the blocking tone generators?

It seems any defense of our country by the citizens without coordination through broadcast communication would be chaos. The gov can shut down ground/radio wave communication and satelite communication and maintain military communication for thier own use.

Military is voluntary now. I heard s 32 year old going to Iraq in a recent deployment state "our mission is to establish democracy". Think democracy there will last as long as a cup of water in a paper grocery sack when we are gone? Point is these young soldiers might do as they are ordered because they have been indoctrinated that way. A reasonable senario will be presented to them as to the need for thier actions. That is why young people are selected for service, they can be indoctrinated. The citizens must communicate with them also.

In most situations where government takes over control of the population the ability of the people to communicate and gather/dissiminate news are the first things to be taken from the public.

How do we stop tone signals from blocking cb and short wave communication? We can't do squat with the satelites.

Does there need to be a certain "PRE SET" level to which us citizens need to address our represenatives in Washington in case of Martial Law shutdown? Addressing "local" officials will mearly target those local RESPONSE groups and let the controling party/entity prepare/retaliate.

Where does the planning begin? How do you impliment the next step? How do you give it unity? How do you distribute a plan? Very problematic to plan and impliment without communication.

Plan, communication, next step, huh?
