Rem 597 VR
« on: September 28, 2009, 03:54:23 PM »
I think I got the model right, its the rem auto 22 that has the look of an AR.  Gander has them on a sales right now.  They look pretty well made but don't have the foggyest has accurate they may be.  Anyone played with one and have opinions.

Errr I think the problem here is that the original Rem 597 was so awful and got such a bad reputation that no one sensible is willing to risk getting burnt by Remington AGAIN  ;)

Actually, I have and regularly use one of the original synthetic Remingtons when it was called a Viper but also known as the synthetic semiauto 597.  I have never heard anything positive about this gun but mine is way more accurate than me.  I've no problem with head shot squirrels as far as I care to shoot them and it has killed a lot of night time foxes and coons in among the chicken and horses.  It has never misfired or jammed with cci mini mags but doesn't like the cheap fodder and will not consistently eject them.  I love mine and wouldn't trade it for a "better" one.  I bought it new shortly after I was married so it was sometime in the mid 90s, probably 1995 or 1996.  It has a 4x scope and has seen who knows how many shots put through it.  It is very uncomfortable to carry for very long.  That mag sticks down in the way so it won't just lay in the cradle of your arms.  I'd rather have a shorter, 5-round mag than the 10.

Glad to hear you have one that works. I looked at them to partake in a sporting .22 L/R indoor competition but was quickly advised not to get one by my local gunshop who did stock them for a while but then stopped as they just had to many complaints and returns on them. Does not help with the shops reputation either.

I hear what you say about the magazine hanging down and although I have a 10 rounder for my Brno model 2 I tend to use the 5 round flush one that came with it originally for the same reason. The 10 round one is useful for sniping Bunnies from one spot or Squirrels on a baited stump where you are sat in one spot but for walking up game flush is better  ;).
