Recent hog hunt with my 7400
« on: September 21, 2009, 02:09:19 AM »
I took two hogs saturday evening with my 30-06 model 7400. There ARE some advantages to using a semi auto to hunt with, I'll have to quantify after work today during breaks between wrapping the meat.

Thats pretty good.  I was able to get a quick second shot into the 200 pound sow before she got into the thick stuff. However she probably was rolling to a halt as I shot her the second time runing most of both shoulders. The rifle is fast into action, accurate and reliable.  The only snivel is the handiest way to keep the rifle around is with the safety on and one in the chamber. I don't care for this if I'm in and out of a truck all day.

It isn't much better with the pump. Leaving the action open makes it almost as slow as a bolt rifle. Is it legal to drive around in your State with a loaded firearm?

Yes it is legal to have a loaded firearm in your vehicle at all times in Texas. The semi auto has the quiet factor over a pump as you can't hear the action cycle and recoil is much less. You can't really leave the action open as the bolt hold open device is the magazine and it only works if the magazine is empty.

We are not blessed with this option here. A loaded firearm in a vehicle even a attached clip if it contains ammo is a no no.

I put a thread in the hog hunting forum on our hunt if anyone is interested. Three hogs with four shots is what I titled it.

You need to line them up properly!  Next time try for four porkers with two shots. ;D

I also think the gas operated 7400 is a bit quieter than bolt actions or pumps.  I don't always hear the bullets hit at close ranges. As to lining them up these feral hogs ain't that easy.
