bought some blades, gonna put some handles on
« on: August 29, 2009, 10:35:30 AM »
I have had a knife made by a guy in Covington Louisiana since 95 and I wanted to get some more.  He was a little
behind but sold me some blades  he had made  ;D
I made him promise me I wasn't going to wipe him out and put him farther behind, and then I walked out with these:
he threw in some ziricote too

yesterday I bought a grizzly G1014Z and a craftsman scroll saw for $175

unfortunately I wasn't paying attention to a tear at the seam of the sand paper belt on one side
and when I sanded on that side she came apart.  A trip to some local Home Depot type places let me know that 6x42 belts
pretty much have to be ordered online   >:(
I also pretty much figured out that the pin holes are 5/32 and ordered some brass rod from Tower Hobbie.
I'm a big osage nut so I ordered some osage handle blanks from Dixie gunworks, along with some bocote and zebrawood

I practiced a little with the scroll saw (which will be supplemented by a band saw as soon as I figure out how to get a good used one)
 on some pine

a lot of this has had me doing some thinking, most of which is focused on the hidden tang.  Thats the one that has got me scratching my head...... ???
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

Thiis how it starts.  Putting handles on a few blades.  Buy a few tools.  Next thing you're making knives from scratch.  Another bitten by the bug.  Welcome to the sickness.

Hidden tangs take some learning. The hardest part for me was learning to fit the guard. Here's a basic tutorial from NorthCoast knives.  When it comes to securing the guard, there are three ways of doing it.  One is to solder it, which I found tedious and it won't work well on stainless steels unless you use a very expensive form of solder.  The other is to just make sure it is well fitted and depend on the fit and the handle to hold it securely in place.  The third, that I know of, is to use JB Weld instead of solder, and that's the one I use.  The trick is to file the top of the guard, the side facing the handle, to leave a small gap where  you can apply the glue.  You just do the top, the juncture where the blade and guard meet should be tight.  Other than that, the tutorial explains the basics pretty well.  If you Google on hidden tang tutorials, you can find a lot of information, some of it confusing.  Better to stick to the basics first.  That and buy some cheap blades from one of the knife making supply houses such as Jantz, Sheffield, or Texas Knifemaker's Supply and practice on those first.

Looks like you have a lot of fun...and headaches...ahead of you! I look forward to seeing your works in progress.

I used to spend a lot of time in Covington. I bet I would have had a lot more fun hanging out with another knifemaker than the girlfriend's parents! :D
