Top Punch question.
« on: September 07, 2009, 02:54:52 PM »
Mr. Smith,
I’m looking at ordering one of your molds and was wondering if you can modify the top punch for my Saeco. I would be more than willing to send it to you when I order my mold and have you look at it when you receive it.

Just let him make you a proper one for your lube sizer when he makes the new mould. I've gotten a proper top punch from him with each mould I've gotten.

Sizer punches for both Star and Saeco are a problem because they use a bastard thread which I, or no one I know of can duplicate.  I understand that Saeco can supply an adapter to handle RCBS and Lyman sizing punches.  Check with them about this, and if so I can make a fitted punch that will work fine.  The other option is to purchase the largest punch Saeco offers in the caliber you want to order an LBT mold for, and fill it with epoxy, which is then set over the bullet.  This will never deform a bullet, or wear.

For Star owners who have the same question, only flat punches are needed, and they should be about .010 smaller than sizer diameter for gas checked bullets.  Gas checked bullets should be pushed through nose first, so the punch can press the check base flat against the bullet and hold it there during sizing.  It is the best sizing arrangement there is for gas checked bullets.  For plain base or bevel based, push the bullets through base first, using the same punch.  In other words, Magma supplies suitable punches for their Star sizers, for any caliber they offer sizer dies for.

Just for the record, The Star sizers use a thread of 1/2x28 UNEF (Unified National Extra Fine).  Not very standard at all.

Okay, I called Saeco and talked to them about an adapter for RCBS and Lyman top punch’s to work with Saeco. They do not have anything like that, however they do make top punch’s the work in RCBS and Lyman.

So when I talked to the teck support person he looked up the treads for the Saeco top punch and they are “5/16 x 24 Fine?”

If you would like I can check mine and see what they are?

Okay, I ran the top punch thru a die and the threads are 5/16 x 24.

I think I popped off without knowing for sure about the Saeco punches.  All based on hearsay, which is something I'm not prone to do.  I'm sorry about that, as hearsay and theory are two things I'm not interested in hearing and sure as the world don't like to pass around!
5/16 X 24 is a standard thread and I could make the punch easy enough, I think.  Send me one, for any type of bullet, along with your mold order, and I'll see what I can do, but it sure won't be as inexpensive as those for Lyman / RCBS, which have just a 6MM straight shank, and only require a lathe turned fairly close diameter.
