Is here someone who can perform a pressure test.
« on: August 30, 2009, 12:04:16 AM »

Hi.
is here someone who can perform a pressure test.
To test the pressure with cannonball and Cannon Grade powder.
And a test without the ball, but with the same amount of powder and 2fg powder and little wading.
And a test with 3fg.
And a test with cannon grade povder  with enough wading.
Maybe it has already been tested?

I doubt there is anyone here that has the facilities to do such scientific testing, the barrel used for such tests of ammunition
is specially designed with measuring equipment machined into it,  other than Government/military or ammunition manufactures
it would be a costly setup to own for the occasional use. You can glean some of this information I would think with equipment
designed to measure velocity, I am pretty sure there would be formulas out there to give you an idea of pressures generated
for the weight & volume of powder plus the weight of a given projectile at a certain velocity.......

perhaps Cannonmn may know of an old manual or manuscript that touches on the subject of test done with cannon barrels.

I have seen a pressure curve somewhere , but cant remember where.
hopefully some other member here could help with that
I dont remember if it actually showed any pressure , or if it just showed where the pressure peak was.

You need to contact Matt Switlick, here is a link to his website http://www.museumandcollector.com

In his currently out of print book the More complete Cannoneer he describe how to build a pressure guage for cannons.  He built one for his pressure work. I am sure you will be able to build you own with Matt's guidance.

what about one of those old powder quality checker type handguns?

i,ve seen them for sale . repos .

then you could report it in terms used back then .????

Matt's pressure testing of various loads were published in "The Artilleryman's Magazine" several years ago.  He tested various powders, loads, different weight projectiles, lugged rounds, rounds with cup sabots.  These were all fired using his Ordnance Rifle.  I don't remember him firing any blank rounds, but he might have.  Sorry I don't remember what issue this came out in.

Is there not a chronograph (Oehler ? ) that has a hookup to a strain gauge that is used for measuring the combination of chamber pressure and bullet velocity?  AND, could that not be adapted?

The Oehler Model 43 Personal Ballistic Laboratory is no longer in production.  However, during the "handgonne" craze of a few years back, I bought one to test black powder pressures in one of the test barrels I made; I have yet to find/take time to use it.

Oehler tech support said that low pressure cartridges like .22 LR needed to have the barrel reduced in diameter from normal because the surface strain is too low for the strain gauge to measure, so I have turned down the test barrel to a wall thickness below the forum recommendation for instrumentation purposes.

One of these days.  Sigh.
