What is the perfect pellet?
« on: August 25, 2009, 03:30:31 PM »
New to GBO. Alot of great info here! Need help. With the 25 acp plug or the MU plug, what is your opinion of the following with Hornady SST 250 grain. Mine is older Huntsman with 7/8 plug. My gun not rated for 150 gr of powder, just up to 100gr. Rate the following: 777, Pyrodex, IMR White Hot, Shockey Gold. List pros and cons. Thanks guys. Glad to be part of GBO.

I have shot the original (not magnum) T7 pellets with the factory Huntsman 7/8 breech plug.  I got better accuracy using loose T7 FFg powder instead.

IMR is owned by Hodgdon, so I don't know if there will be a lot of difference between their current offering and the White Hots.

A really good combination for me has been the MU breech plug, 90 gr Black Horn 209, 250gr .45cal XTP in a Harvester short smooth black sabot and Rem STS 209 shot shell primer.  No blowback and very accurate.

You wont find a lot of pellet fans on here. You can get better accuray with loose powder, working up your load at 5gr at a time. Plus pellets tend to crack if you load tight which will help your accuracy again and if the pellets crack there's no telling where u will impact. If you just have to use pellets I'd use T7. But loose is the way to go IMO. My huntsman shoots the SST very well, Good luck and welcome to GBO!

I will say that in a treestand, there is no faster reload than a Hornady SST Lock-n-Load, loose powder is great on the range, but at deer size target in early Fall with foliage, a 50 yard shot in the Mountains of SC, pellets rule.

I was not aware that they made pellets is 3f black powder. Anyone else using them?

The point of my post was that I don't believe they make a perfect pellet.  I haven't even been able to find a good pellet.

I'd rather have 100% reliable ignition and easy cleaning.

I don't care for pellets either, a pound of Goex FFF costs me about 12 bucks...
I don't even know what pellets cost but the are more expensive and you get less
shots out of a pack of pellets than a pound of powder...With a muzzleloader you are reloading each shot, the powder charge needs to be consistant and the barrel needs to be the same condition to get the best accuracy...

I need the real thing for my flinters anyway so I just use black...I quit trying to
speed load years ago, guess I got old and leary of doing such...

In my Knight, I always run a couple of damp patches down the bore between shots, even when hunting...This insures that the 2nd shot will go all the way down...With my flinters, I can shoot several shots without cleaning but I usually do so for safety purposes anyway...

i can shoot 10 or more times with pyrodex pellets before i notice an accuracy curve.
like i said before... you gotta clean her anyway. with the right stuff its as easy as
do'n a centerfire... but, thats my onion--- ;D

if you know your load, gun and its kill distance...
the pyrodex does a great job. if your site in is correct, one shot is ALL it should take anyway
for whitetail... according to your shot placement!!! :o thats the trick!!!

sumtimes i have to reload quickly when hawg hunt'n. cus them critters run in herds and
usally can get a couple before they know whats go'n on...
 i don't know bout y'alls hawgs.....

i'm not knock'n loose powder, i like it...too   ;D

I could have been more clear when I started this post. Sorry. It was not intended to say that pellets compare to loose, only to say, if you wanted to use the pellets due to their fast reload, which would be the best. Like which had most consistant ignition, ease of cleaning, and yes beyond 75 yards, accuracy. 99% of the time, it is one shot one kill. In 2006 one of the biggest bucks I have ever taken was due to pellets. I shot at the deer @ 55 yards. Later I discovered the first shot missed it's mark due to a 1 inch sapling that intercepted the round. Now the deer is at 9 yards, very alert and spooked.[I am 20 ft in a climber, in a tall pine, no cover around me] I was forced to load the Huntsman left handed [ I am right handed] with the gun laying across  my lap. Loose powder was not an option. I had a good second shot and killed the deer. Was it a a once in a lifetime run of bad luck to hit the tree, maybe. Will I ever need to reload like that again, who knows. If I was bench rest shooting for high score and prizes, yes loose powder rules. But when you are hunting where 99% of deer are killed at less than 50 yards due to thick cover, and you are looking at pie plate groups, pellets rule.

I'm not sure how fumbling with 2 or 3 pellets is any faster than pouring a pre-measured load of loose powder down the barrel (my speed loaders hold the powder in one end and the saboted bullet in the other).  But then again that's just me.   ::)

#1 Yes speedloaders are quick, however, you cannot always pour it in, look at my post about the gun laying horizontal because the deer was real alarmed on the second shot. Can't pour sideways.

#2 The Hornady Lock N Load sabot has a tail that holds up to 3 pellets, I trim to fit 2. There is no fumbling, just one thing to put in the hole.

Well, if you're worried about that 1 in a million situation you described, the answer would be to keep your rifle vertical after the shot rather than laying it horizontal on your lap.  Other than that, I can reload one handed with my speed loader (and I don't have to buy Hornady's gimmicky sabots).

I am more of a pellet fan myself { T7 }. For the actual hunting situation I think its easier to drop in 2 or 3 pellets then the loose stuff. But what ever works for someone, might not work for another.

Yep, find what you like, and use what makes you happy. That is why Henry Ford's idea, "You can any color you want as long as its Black", does not always fit the bill. Nice discussion guys. Good to talk about something that we do have a choice about, unlike most stuff in the world today! Good Huntin' everyone!
