My Marlin 1895 .45-70 is one of my lightest recoiling rifles, at around 7 foot pounds, with 300-350g hardcast running around 1100fps.  (About 13.5g HS6.)  It it also my heaviest recoiling rifle, at around 48 foot pounds, with 460g hardcast running 1812fps.  Lots of laos in-between, too...

Take your pick.

IMHE I found that my Dad's old H&R shikari kicked less with remington 405gr. loads then his pre 64 Winchester model 94 in 30-30 with 150gr. federal loads.

I use 325 grain Hornady Leverevelution for hunting deer and hog. The recoil is no problem--I'm 57. Even the 540 grain Garrett cartridge is not all that bad, and will kill virtually any game animal on earth. The .45/70 is a great caliber with a storied past.

The Garrett .45-70 cartridge has already killed all the big ones with 4 legs.

I just love the 45/70. I have an 1895xlr. It is very accurate. I love the recoil and the reloading opportunities for this round. There are so many combinations of powder and bullets that you can't help find a load just for you. If you make your own bullets thats even better. I also have a Sharps 1874 model in 45/70. That gun is beautiful. Shoots blackpowder like a dream. The skies the limit but if you are on the fence then get that fence post out of your bum
