Took my stainless contender in a 12 inch 22 hornet Bullberry barrel to the range last week along with a Ruger 77/22 Hornet rifle. I am using remington brass with CCI 400 small rifle primers. I have tested several loads with various powders. I have tried Imr 4227,Winchester 296, and Lil Gun. After doing some reading here and else where I had high hopes for Lil gun especially in the rifle. To this point I had found nothing for the rifle that worked good at 100 yrds. I am wondering how many shots you hornet shooters are shooting for groups and what primers you might be using with your loads. I believe that my Bullberry barrel has a 1 in 12 twist also but I would need to check. It does do a great job with 12 grs of Lil gun and a Hornady 40 gr v-max. I also found that it really likes the 35gr v-max with 10grs of 296. That 3 shot group was under or right at 1/2 inch. I did shoot 5 shots for group with that load but the 4th and 5th shot were out of the original group by a small amount. The rifle likes the lil gun 12.5grs with the Hornady v-max. not many of my other test loads worked in the rifle. I was suprised that Lil gun didn't do better in the pistol but maybe a change of primer would help. Of course trying to find any others right now might be fun. Al

I use about 12.6-12.8 gr Lil'gun with CCI 500 small PISTOL primers with either the 35 or 40 vmax or 33 gr Speer TNT.  I  use Hornady brass and a Lee Factory crimp die to put a light crimp on the load.  It is reported that the small pistol primers are milder and, coupled with a light crimp, allow the cartridge to build pressures slower and more consistently.  The Lee die only runs about $10.  I have ran the before crimp and after loads over the chrony and have proven that the light crimp not only improves accuracy, but also gave better velocities, ES and SD in my Ruger Hornet.

I had a couple Ruger 22H rifles and gave up on them having any kind of acceptable accuracy.  I have and Anschutz, kimber, and Tc contender and they all shoot well with 13.0-13.2 Lil Gun, small pistol primers, and various 40 grain bullets. The berger 40 HP shoots exceptionally well and cycles through some magazines where some of the plastic tipped bullets are too long to go through a magazine.

WC680 became my powder of choice for all of my current Hornets (both the 17's and 22's).   For the 22 H's I shot both the Remington 33 gr V-Max and Winchester 46 gr OPE bullets with a very light crimp.   I used WSR primers and both WIn and R-P brass.   Still have the pound of Lil'Gun I bought to try in them many years ago and never did.   Was no need to fix what wasn't broke.

My "Hornets" included Bullberry and TC Contender pistol barrels (10"-14"), Bullberry 20" Contender cabine barrels, and BRNO ZKW465, Cooper M38 and Browning 1885 Low Wall rifles.  My use for all of them was small diggers at long ranges that required repeatable accuracy, and sometimes for predator hunting.

35 GR. HDY V-MAX  Hodgdon  H110  find a load between 11 and 12 grains, and you will be happy with the accuracy.  This is more of a contender load, but it will shoot better than lil' gun any day.


This is not my load, but from two buddys that have been shooting the hornet for years.

     I use 7.5 grains of IMR 4227 for a lead bullet, Lyman #225438
     50 grain Hornady V-Max, 7.9 to 8.0 grains VihtaVouri Oy N110
      Using Winchester brass and primers.

      4.7 grains of Unique will do in a jacketed 50 grain bullet.

You're using too much primer. I shoot 12.5 grs of Lil Gun with a Rem 6 1/2 primer. I saw an INSTANT improvement from just over an inch to shooting bug-hole groups by switching to the milder primer.

Also, seat them long. Seat them out to just off the rifling with the 40 gr's.

I gave a handful of my loads to a buddy to try in his new Savage 40 single shot, and they shot bug-holes in his gun too.

Hornady 40 gr Vmax, Rem brass Rem 6 1/2 primer, seated long (like 1.9" if I recall-I can look it up for you in my notebook if you want), and 12.5 grs of Lil-Gun.

12.5 lil gun under a calhoon 37 gr dbbl hp small rifle primer cci.about 2800 fps in my ruger 77. ymmv.
works great on varmints up to coyotes at 100 yrds..

  Both my Contender 22 Hornet barrels(10" & 21")have given superb results with Lil'Gun, 40gr V-Max, CCI 400 primers and the Lee Factory Crimp die.  I've also incorperated the Lee Collet sizing die into the equation as well.  No experience with the Ruger Hornet.
