Shock choice by 8/31 !!!
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:04:12 AM »
NEED to change the factory shocks on my recently aquired '96 Cherokee. I mostly drive ROUGH paved or unpaved roads, logging roads, farm roads,or no roads at all(nothing radical). Found a deal on the two brands of shock that interest me most and it expires on 8/31. Bilstein HD's and KYB Monomax. Any input, opinions or advice,APPRECIATED!!

I have run both KYBs and Bilsteins and both are good shocks.  The Bilsteins on my 91 Sonoma 4X4 ride really good and work off road.  Now I don't do any real rough off roading, just ranch road driving out on the lease and use 4L when the dirt road out by the wheat field is muddy.  I think the Bilsteins I put on my 99 Suburban ride rough with no load but work great with a load.  I had KYBs on my 91 Suburban and they rode great.  Both Suburbans were 2X4s.  You won't go wrong with either brand of shock.

My brother runs the good Monroe heavy duty gas shocks on his toyota 4 runner and they ride every bit as good as the KYBs and Bilsteins for what it's worth.

If we're talking about a stock ride height  I recommend Monroe Sensatrac shocks for all 4 corners

This is a very good preforming and riding shock for the money. Its definitely a top choice.

I have Bilstein 5150's on my Comanche. I'm here to tell you that this thing rids better then my wifes 43,000$ Grand Cherokee!!!! Now these shocks where 1130 each so we are not really comparing apples to oranges, I'm just saying that like many things in life, you get what you pay for.

I agree with krochus, for the money, go with the seneca tracks!!

hands down best off road shock ive ever used is the rancho 9000. Its firm when it needs to be but still rides well on the highway.

First off,I APPRECIATE the replies!  I went with the Bilsteins(ordered 'em 8/30) BUT got an e-mail Tuesday evening saying the rears were backordered til Nov!  Switched my order to the Monomax.
I did ALOT of looking for opinions on shocks(not much out there) and the conclusion I've come to is that ride quality is the main concern. To me that's a very subjective issue. Some like a soft ride while others like firm. Myself,as long as the shocks keep my tires on the ground,I like a firm ride.
