Advice on RUST!!! On ULSH Action
« on: August 29, 2009, 11:40:30 PM »
So I took my ULSH out yesterday and there was a little bit of rust on the action.  None anywhere else.  Anyone else have this happen?   What should I do about it?

The one trick I like for small rust "dots" is to use some gun oil and a older penny, say '70's when there was more actual copper content. Using the edge of the penny and a goodly amount of oil, "scrape" the rust off the gun steel. This will remove the rust and leave some copper in its place. Continue until smooth and wipe off all excess. the spot should almost completely disappear.

Fine steel wool and lots of oil also works, but can remove too much of the surrounding bluing if your not really careful.

Good luck,

I was thinking about full detail stripping it just to see if there is any rust on the inside.  good or bad idea?  I was also considering duracoating the action.  Would the best way to do that be to take the gun apart and airbrush the duracoat onto the action only?

Oh yeah and is there a good guide anywhere to detail stripping a handi-rifle?  I dont even know what tools I'd need.

How bad is it???  It would have to be pretty bad for me to want to totally refinish one.  If just the spots, try my advice and see if it comes out to your liking.

I just don't want to have to worry about it happening over and over again.  I live in a pretty humid climate right now and I had the gun out shooting about a month ago and put a light film of oil on the action before I put it away.

After you get it refinished, change to a good gun oil like Breakfree CLP that will protect it.  ;)

Hello,
I have decided to have mine Duracoated. After that, I say goodbye to rust forever. Here's more info about it. ;)
