Walking around rifles

I am planning a set of rifles for my wife and I.We are both south paws so it will be either a remington 700 or a savage 110 action. Wood stock,20" barrel,variable power scope,detachable magazine.Weghting no more then 7 1/2 lbs. I am considering one of the short 6.5's(6.5x47 etc...) any thoughts and ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Just caliber...though there's nothing wrong with your choices.  I'd recommend a 308 or 7-08.  I think that have reach and bullet selection.  You asked and please let us know how it turn out.

  I'm also left handed, and many years ago i built mine as a light weight mountain rifle.  I built it on a LH 700 Rem. action, chambered in 280 Rem., and it weighs close to 7 pounds...  It has been a very good choise for me, and if i built another today, it would be another 280 Rem..

The 6.5x47 will do everything I need with less recoil then the larger calibers mentioned but I appeciate the input.

Savage already has rifles in the 6.5 lbs range with a 22" barrel.  Why not just pick up a .243 Win and have the barrel set back and ream the chamber to 6x47 Lapua or SM?  Cut the barrel back to 20" and recrown.  Top it of with a VXII 2-7X33 at 10.5 oz and some Talley rings and I'm sure you can stay under 7.5 lbs. 

I know it isn't a 6.5 but I'm sure it will do the job just the same.

It is a thought. I just happen to like the heavier 6.5 with the heavier bullets.

Hmmmm, two rifles, not more than 7.5 lbs each, 20" bbls, good for southpaws.....how about a couple of ol Winchester 94s???  Good to 200 yds if you are good enough, good for left or right handed use, light enough for walking around with....and a lot cheaper than some of the other suggestions.  HTH.

Hello Curt,
I have to agree with Mikey a .357 in a short barreled lever seems to cover what you asked about.  My trapper is good to go for anything here in Arizona under 150 yds with a Buffalo Bore as first out of the barrel.  Follow up in unknown area are 158 grn lead reloads.  (Them Buffalo Bore 125 are expensive)  It sort of depends where you are walking.  I looked at your posts and you say you have a shortend 45-70 handi.  Have you thought about a 12 or 20 guage handi, barrel taken down to 18.5" for you and your wife.  I admit it doesn't really need a scope, but you get the option of bird shot, to buck shot, to slugs for a fire arm that covers out to 100 yds.  Weight is way below your 7 1/2 limit and you can buy two for the price of many rifles.  I cut down a 20 guage single and when the wife and I take the jeep out into back country it is the one I make sure is in the back seat, probably because my little shotgun, 34" long, puts two slugs 1" apart at 50yds.

If it was me I would build on remington hands down ( dont like savage at all). And would take a real searios look at the 6.5-284

I am going to agree with Dr. Doug.
with the 700 action, I have one in 223 and sticking a really short round into the Short action is a bit of a pain and they don't always want to line up right.
if 6.5 is your choice great.  have them made into either 260 rem or 6.5 X 55 Swede and reload them to what speeds you want out of the 6.5X45 or use lighter bullets faster to get your desired recoil level.
Good luck on the build, post a picture when you are done with them.

How about a .260 Rem, 7mm-08 or 7x57 for her and a 6.5mm-06 or .264 WM for you?

CD, sounds like a fun project.  You shouldn't have a problem with the weight.  I have a Rem. short action .308 with a lightweight 22" barrel and a Leupold 4x sc ope that only weights 6 lbs.  Brown precision stock and the lightweight barrel brought the weight down.  Check on the length of the action to see how far out you can seat those heavy 6.5 bullets, they may be all inside your case with no room for powder.  In a single shot it wouldn't matter but it might in a bolt action.

Loaded length runs 2.7-2.8" Approx. .3" shorter then the 260 Rem.

Just my 2 cents. 7mm-08 is hard to beat 140 grain will take down most anything.The 120 grain super easy on recoil handload to however fast you want. Ackley Improve it and make it even faster..Here is an inexpesive way to get two good rifles for the cost of one decent custom. You can buy them brand new for around $550.Youth model for her and or fullsize for you.Burris 2-7 matte finish and you are set.
