Scope choice for a mini 14?
« on: February 02, 2009, 04:43:50 PM »
A friend of mine has a Ruger Mini 14.  He wants to use it for predator hunting. My question is, what kind of scope should he mount on it?  He wants a good scope.  What is a good round for this kind of gun?

please reply

I have had great accuracy with the 55 grainers in my Mini Wood stocked SS shooting open sights.  I'll be mounting a new market Leupold on mine in medium Ruger rings.

:) I put a 4x Burris on mine. It will only be used for called coyotes, so the power is high enough for that. A var. power would be fine if smaller animals were the target, but I have a .223 bolt for that shooting. ;)

I have a Mini 14 that I got fairly recently. I have a 3-9x40 Nikon Prostaff on it, and I've shot a lot of different kinds of factory ammo through it. Some group better than others, like any rifle I guess. The ones I'm shooting right now are Winchester 55 grain soft points, it's grouping about 2'' with them.

I use a scope that is light and compact - Bushnell has an Elite 3200 in 3 x 10 that works well - however a Nikon 4X Prostaff in SS for $140 would also work quite well. The action pounds the scope a bit so I would avoid the cheapies that you could use on a bolt action and view the Nikon as the base model.
