Great scope for cheap price?
« on: September 07, 2009, 04:18:53 AM »
My friend is looking for a scope for around 100 dollars and plans to mount it on the H&R USH (SB2-980).  The scope is made by Cabela's and has three to four aiming points 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards.  The question is, doe's it hold  zero? Doe's the reticle work like how it's supposed to? Any other pointers you could give me about this scope would be greatly appreciatied.

Cabelas does not make scopes, they have them made by various other optics companies.  A great scope for $100 is always something to be skeptical about, but I think you can buy a $100 scope from Cabela's with as much confidence as anywhere else. Cabelas is generally very good about honoring their satisfaction guarantee, their optics are generally priced fairly for their value and quality, sometimes even comparatively better.  You can read reviews and call a product specialist toll-free and discuss your questions.  For slugs, I usually stick with fixed magnification scopes (2.5 or 4X) at a higher price point and know the trajectory of the sabot/slugs I am using, but who knows, maybe the one you are looking at is decent for the money.  The name on it would make little difference to me because I have always experienced that Cabelas stands by what they sell.  Generally scopes that will stand up to slugs cost more money.

Cabelas is generally good about standing behind their products, but you might need to buy 2 to keep a back-up in your pocket.
Mixing that scope with the compensating reticle and the slug gun you're talking about I probably wouldn't do, it's a recipe for scrambled scope innards. I agree with Cement Man, if I only had that to spend on the scope I would go fixed power 4X or even 6X. I've seen the Nikon Monarch 4x40 several places now for $99. If he absolutely insisted on variables in that $ range I would look at Bushnell Trophy.

Cabela's scopes have no warranty beyond 30 days with receit unless its bought in the bargain cave then there isn't any refund at all. Buy only a scope from a name brand company. I didn't and lost hard earned $$$

I have to admit - I had never really investigated what Cabelas actual warranty terms were.  I trusted that they would treat me right if I was dissastisfied with a product.  I copied and pasted off of their website:
Cabela's Brand Optics may be returned or exchanged within One Year of purchase.
Non Cabelas Brand optics and electronics may be returned within 60 days of purchase with the original sales receipt. The item must be returned in its original packaging and with all accompanying manuals and accessories. After 60 days, these items must be returned to the manufacturer. All manufacturers' warranties are in effect.
Optics include:
Binoculars, rangefinders, scopes, nightvision, red-dots, boresighters, sunglasses.

I just called Cabelas and asked what would happen if a Cabelas scope failed after the 1 year warranty period - how would repairs be handled?  Rebecca in Customer Service indicated that they have several options depending upon the nature of the defect - they have reimbursed customers for repairs, prorated use and offered a replacement, or replaced after evaluation. They do not have a repair department.

Several years ago I returned to them a pair of low/medium priced binocs that I had owned for about 7 years and used a lot.  They offered me a very fair trade-in on a new pair, so I was satisfied.  This experience agrees with what I was told today in response to my question.
