Which 30-30 ammunition seems to be the most accurate
« on: September 25, 2003, 05:46:42 AM »
I am aware that all guns shoot different but somtimes one type ammunition seems to be more accurate with higher velocities than other companies. I am talking about factory ammunition, not reloaded ammo. Any performance difference between the 150 grain as compaired to the 170 grain on deer. Any good results from deer hunters out there?

The Winchester Power Point Plus 150 gr are the most accurate out of my gun.  The bullets are actually around 200 fps faster than any other 150 grain made, so it is a win-win situation for me.

Thanks I was looking at this round. I am going to give them a try. 200 feet faster, you can't complain about that. I always prefered the heavier 170's, but it does seem to be a good round. I wonder why Winchester didn't do this to the 170 Power Points? The 30-30 can use all the extra help for distance and trajectory it can get.

I have not used factory ammo for several years, but the best I used was the 150g  Winchester silver tip. I much prefer 150g bullets to the 170's, for deer hunting.

In my Marlin Both the Winchester 150gr. Silvertips and Remington 150.gr. Core-lokts group about the same. That is an average of 1-3/4" at 100yds. from a rest. The remingtons impact about an inch lower on average. I do not use factory ammo other than as a controling factor to ensure my handloads are as good or better than what can be bought over the counter. I had a Winchester 94 (early 1990's vintage)that woud shoot about 2-3/4" groups with the Silver tips and about 3-3/8" groups with the core-lokts. Hand loads got down to about 2-1/4". OK for deer hunting, but as the rifle didn't do as well as the marlin and the lever and bolt felt "loose" I eventually traded it off. I have a Savage 99 That I yet have to shoot factory ammo in so will not comment on it. Hope this helps, Rob P.

My old Winchester - 1920s vintage - shoots the 170 grainer best.  With open sights she will group around 3" at 100 yds.  Mikey.
