I have shot a bunch of them around Calgary Alberta with my Crossman .357 with 6 and 8 inch barrels.  That's a .177 calibre.  You have got to belly crawl a lot but it works out to about 50 yards(8 inch). Not much chance of a clean kill past 50.
Get as close as you can, then get ten yards closer.

You in Ok.
Have hunted dogs for nearly forty years, from rimfires to medium bore centerfires, and once, very judiculusly, airguns.  It's simply poor ethics.
I've had dogs make it down thier holess with two feet of entrails dragging behind them.  And yes, it was a bad shot.  But anybody who says they don't occasionally botch a shot is somebody I wouldn't hav in my house.
If you can headshoot them every time, you bet, go to it.  But to body shoot them is pure and simple bad sportsmanship.  I hope you reconsider your hunting ethic before the next hunt.  Varmint or not, they still deserve our respect and a humane dispatch.  You simply can not do that with any airgun unless you're right on top of them.
Suggestion;  don't try to bull***t an ole' bull******r.

badshotlal,

I would like to know what was the caliber, make and model of the air rifle you used when you shot the prairie dogs you mentioned.  The Rapid 12/250 by Theoben that 'donavan2' is talking about is one of the most powerful .25 caliber PCP rifles to be bought today.  At over 900 fps. it gives you over 40 fpe. and that will turn a 5 lb. rabbit 180 degrees with a body hit at 50 yards and anchor him in his tracks.  I just took delivery on mine(got it used from Theoben) and will report back on it after I get more time in with it.  Lawdog

....... I think your wrong buddy, and my experience provides me with a different view. I ve got any number of air rifles (both PCP and springers) that put out between 15 fe and 35 fe that are very capable of cleanly taking out prairie dogs and jackrabbits at 50 yards, and nutria and fox out to around 40. Cleanly, humanely, and consistantly. I know because I've done it. I think either you were using a very underpowered air rifle or were shooting out of the appropriate range. I know when taking prairie dogs with my .223 or .250 savage at longer range it is a SHOOT, but when taking them with my air guns, it is a HUNT. That's part of the fun. Get the right gun and give it a try again, you might change your mind.

Cheers,

Jim

dont let that guy rub you the wrong way- theres always guys that talk about stuff they dont understand. after shootin guns like these you get an understanding for thier power and accuracy- id put my air rifle against any powder gun in an accuracy contest inside 50 yds- and i know theres only gonna be a few hi-end target guns that can compete- tell that guy to get a $1500 air gun, go shoot it then come back and preach to us----what an idiot.

Well I cant speak from experiance about prarie dogs, because we just have not got them in England, but I can vouch for the fact that an Eliminator .25 running at 30 flt lbs or Rapid .25 running 40 ft lbs will definatly take out a rabbit at 50 yds

Even a rabbit that is gut shot from a .22 mag may run some distance.

Hit your the quarry in the right place i.e heart, lung or head and that Elininator should easly stop quarry the size of a parrie dog at the distance described.

boltaction,

First of all let me welcome you to Graybeard Outdoors.  The best forum on the net for hunter and shooters of all types.  I noticed this is your first post and I'm looking forward to many more from you on the shooting sports from England.  So far the farthest I have shot at a large Jack Rabbit, a big fat 9 pound doe, with my Rapid 12/250 was just over 60 long paces.  One shot in the chest with a Crow Magnum pellet anchored her on the spot.  Again let me welcome you.  Keep us informed on what is happening on the English shooting front.  Lawdog
