Pachmayr "MAGNUM" forend for Encore

I ordered a Pachmayr forend from a supplier for my Encore.  When I received it it came with a note saying that I could not use it on my .500 or .454.  I called the number on the slip of paper and was connected with the customer service office of Lyman/Pachmayr.  I was told that in order to get the "MAGNUM" forend I would have to "trade in" the standard forend that I had received.  I asked about the possibility of purchasing one of the "magnum" forends outright and was told that they are not for sale?  It seems that:

A)     I have to pay additional postage.

B)     I have to wait an additional period of time.

In order to get a forend that you would think would be available for sale.

Has anyone else had this problem?  How did the "MAGNUM" forend work out?

I bought the Pachmayr grip and forend set from www.midsouthshooterssupply.com when they first came out.  Well this was before they had a standard or magnum set.  I bought mine for my 12" 454 Casull and it fits perfectly.  The outside of the barrels are the same shape as my 15" 223 Remington barrel.

Question, have you tried to install this forend?  I am sure it will install and work just fine as mine has on 223 Remington to 454 Casull.

     I also got the "standard" set when they first came out.  The "standard" forend was reccomended on any Encore barrels up to and including .308win.  For anything from the 30-06 up, they suggested using the "magnum" forend.  Pachmayer explained to me that the "magnum" forend was lighter than the "standard" forend and wouldn't stress(bend) the mounting screws under the heavier recoil of the more powerful rounds.  I've used mine without problem on my .308Win, but I've only put 50-100 rounds through it while using this forend.  I really like the grip, but going to switch to Georgia Jim's forend and adapter.  Even the "standard" forend is considerably lighter than the Pachmayer forend/adapter that I've used for long years on my Contenders.

The standard forend MAY work on the 454 but it does not work on the 500.  I even glued it in place with silicone rubber and it pulled out after 47 shots.

When you say it pulled out, what pulls out of what?

I shoot my Encore pistol off sticks or free hand; I don't see anything pulling out.

The rear screw broke in the barrel and the front screw pulled out of the barrel.  The black silicone tore and some of it remained on the barrel and the remainder was still attached to the forend.  The forend has too much mass for those tiny screws.

Don't know yet.  Never seen one.  When I get mine from Pachmayr I'll let you know.  My guess is that it is made of a different material and is alot lighter.

I have one of the "Magnum" forends I bought in a grip/forend set from Midsouth a while back when they had them on sale.  I do not have the original Pachmayr Encore forend to compare it to, but the Magnum is pretty much a skelatonized forend with just enough webs left in it to hold the shape.  On my reloading scales, my "Magnum" forend weighs 381 grains with the mounting screws.  I hope that helps.  I am not too sold on the Pachmayr forneds for the Encores.  I was hoping for something similar to the Contender forends with a hanger bar that I could somewhat float.  This magnum is built around sort af a block area that contacts the barrel in a limited area, but there is no way to spread the sides so they do not rub the barrel or frame.  The grip on the other hand is pretty nice.

I'm not sure why you were told the "Magnum" forend is not for sale individually, Midsouth has them in stock.  Here is the link if it okay to post.  I think Midsouth is/was a GBO sponser.

Thanks alot.  I think that they just wanted to make extra money by having me send my forend in for a trade.  I had a hunch that the "magnum" model would have to be alot lighter.  Well live and learn...

I got my set at Cabela's in Wheeling last year. It was a "Standard" forend set, which I understand has been dropped, in favor of the set with a Magnum forend. There was a note in my set which said that the standard forend could be exchanged for a magnum. I sent mine back, got the magnum, and it works well on either my .375 JDJ, or my .308 Win. There was no charge, but of course there was the couple dollar cost of mailing the standard forend back. I was, and am, satisfied.

Does the magnum forend have open cavities?

I finally got my Magnum forend.  It does have larger cavities and you can tell which is which by the length of the retaining screws.  The standard forend uses to different length one about 5/8" and the other about 1".  The magnum forend uses 2 very short 3/8" screws to hold it in place.  It is ALOT lighter and has held up (so far) to over 110 full power loads in my 500 S&W.  My only complaint with the whole process was that I sent in a forend that cost me $33.00 for one that sells for $20.00.
