Thinking of getting a TC - where to start?

I'm thinking about getting a TC G2 but I'm not sure where to start.  I want one in 45 Colt with an 8-10" barrel, but all the factory offers seems to be the 45/.410 combo which I have no interest in.  What's a reasonable retail price for the frame and where would be a good place to go and get the barrel that I want?  Any preferences on iron sights?  The main purpose for the gun would be to hunt deer where shots would rarely be over 75 yards.

I would strongly encourage you to haunt the classifieds section here at GBO. Not everything is a good deal, but I have seen some VERY good deals come up from time to time. You can get a good idea of what the prices are running just by watching the ads for a while, then you'll know right away when you see a "smoking deal" and you can pounce on it.

The nice thing about barrels is there's always room for one more. Plus if you ever get tired of a barrel, they're very easy to sell or trade for something else that you want.

  Ed's did show a 45 Colt (not .410/45) here recently.  A 10" would likely do the job, getting a 14 is just insuring shot placement.

A T/C Contender barrel in a plain old 45 Colt chambering is uncommon but the T/C Custom shop will make you one if you like.  You could also get the barrel from Match Grade Machine, On Target Technologies and other purveyors of custom barrels.

IMHO, don't limit yourself to a G2.  While the G2 is a very nice product, so is the older flat sides.  Many prefer the trigger on the flat sides (there are many variations, the latest major improvement being the creation of the "easy open"), as that trigger is sweeeeet!!!.

The G2 can be made to have a very, very good trigger, the old style starts there, and with no additional cost other than maybe  the spring out of a bic pen, has a marvelous one.

FWIW, you'll love either.

By the way, you might consider a 30 30, but there are tons of opinions on this subject too.

    I'm a great fan of the .45Colt in a Contender.  I have both 10" and 14".  That said my advice to first time Contender folks is a .22lr barrel and LOTS of shootin'.  Shoot the heck out of it with factory iron sights(which I like very much) and then scope it and shoot a bunch more.  Of course if you've read much here at GB's you're already aware of the addiction that comes with these things.  I'll second skarke on the non G-2 frame and also don't be afraid of buying used TC stuff.  Well over half of mine were bought used and I've never been dissapointed and if there should be a problem TC will fix it usually just for the cost of shipping it to them.   WELCOME and GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  ;)

I at one time ordered a 45 colt cpmtemder barrel from the custom shop and waited way to long to get it . Once i did get it the chamber was so oversize it would not shoot anything decent . I sent it back and explained it would chamber a 454 casull case with a 340 grain bullet and still not get to the lands . I think when I said it would chamber a 454 that got them going. I had them make me a 38 special match chamber barrel instead.
I have a bull berry 45 colt barrel and am very happy with it .

Ditto on the original frames... the easy open's are the best.   

No need to go the cost of a custom barrel for 45 Colt.

Ed's Contender's (a board sponsor) is a great way to find what you want in a factory barrel, and for a fair price.   If Ed can't find you a 10" 45 Colt barrel it can't be found.   Great gent to do business with too.

Jpuke,Im also new to Contenders.
I have just bought a used Contender package deal that had a # of barrels all of them being pistol cartridges.
This website and its members have been helpfull with all the silly questions I posted up. The wealth of knowledge here is incredible and their help has guided me into the Rifle cartridges I am interested in.
A forum is only as good as its members, Im darn glad I found this place. ;D
