M-99 Throat
« on: September 11, 2009, 06:06:28 AM »
I have a Savage Model 99C I had rebored/rerifled and rechambered to .358 from .243 by the late Dick Nickel.  This was a number of years ago BTW.

Now for those of you who never heard of Dick, he was a craftsman and gentleman of the first order.  I could go on and on about him, but suffice it to say his death created a gap that can never be filled.

I played with the rifle some, but never really got down to really working with it until these last couple of years.  The problem I have discovered is that the throat seems to be very short.  I cannot seat any bullet I've tried to the SAMMI max OAL.  For example: Rem 200 gr. PSP's.

My question is, can the throat on the M99 be reamed with the barrel still screwed into the action, or does the barrel have to be removed?

While it's been a loooong time, since I've had a Savage 99 apart, IIRC,with the buttstock and bolt removed, there not enough of a straight shot into an installed barrel's chamber for a throat reamer's extension handle to clear the rear roof of the receiver.

But, I stand to be corrected - as it's been a very long time, indeed.

There are pull through reamers to do that job.  An extension rod screws into the front of the reamer to turn it.  Larry

Thanks Larry!   ;D  Now that you mention it I remember hearing about pull through reamers some time ago.  I'll get in touch with 4D and see if he has one.
