45-70 brass question
« on: September 13, 2009, 01:20:21 PM »
I am shooting a H&R BC in 45-70, I'm useing h-322 and I am having trouble getting my COL short enough to chamber, I'm using once fired brass, Some or hornady and the other brass has R P stamped on it now the hornady brass is 2.035 and the R P is 2.098. When I try to seat the bullet in the hornady brass the case buckles but  with the R P brass the case dosnt buckle and the round will chamber in the gun. Now my question is, Is the Hornady brass short or is the other brass a little longer b\c it was fired from another gun with a little diff. chamber dimension? is that possible? I'm using 58 grns of H-322 and a 300 gr barnes bullet. I'm looking for some real knock down power! also if some one else knows of a powder the works better let me and feel free to ask me all the questions  you need!
I have to many guns to list.

The brass lenght according to the manuals should be 2.105.  So yours are a little short it seems.  I load RP brass for mine and have buckled them because they weren't flared enough.  I think at 2.035 they aren't getting flared enough and the bullet is catching on the mouth of the case.

Cliff nailed it , the Hornady brass is from some of their Evol. ammo I'd guess and yes its shorter because of the bullet they use , and the case mouths are not being flaired enough due to the short case .

Ajust your belling die down for the Hornady cases and your problem should go away , also try some Reloder 7 or IMR4895 .

If the belling die is coming down to the shell holder and your not getting enough flair , you may need to take some metal off either the shell holder or the bottom of the die .

Trim all of the brass to the correct length, size, expand then chamfer inside and deburr outside. If that doesn't do it, I recommend a different expander die. All of my dies are Redding or RCBS and I have never had a problem.

The Hornady brass is short.  It also appears someone has trimmed your RP.  However, the BC has a short throat, so you can't stretch the COL anyway.  If all else fails, you can cut off an alignment punch and flare cases by hand.
