30-30 or 7.62x39 for HOGS

So how many here have used either of these calibers for hog hunt'n?
Since they both have similar ballistics I was curious as to loads used and success rate with each.

I can vouch for the 30-30 as my boys routinely go to the woods sporting twin Marlin 336C's.  They take a lot of hogs with the 30-30.

You don't need to be hundreds of yards away with hogs.  Get close...and they don't take it well in the neck or head.

I had 250 rounds of 7.62x39 (someone gave me) that I gave away, because I don't have a rifle in or shoot that caliber.  Interesting bullet and probably just fine as "hog medicine" too.

Shot placement is important, but not nearly so as the confidence of the shooter to place the shot where he wants it to go.

When the crops are harvested and we go spotlighting those two rounds are what we use the most.

Basically equal out to 100 yards or so, then the little Russian starts pulling away from the
old 30-30 with standard loadings. Now load a little 110 grain PSP in the old 30-30
(I use a single shot so a pointed bullet is ok) and the story changes and the 30-30 holds
it's own. I have found that most hunting type loadings for the 7.62x39 seem to be lightly
constructed jackets and fragment severely. The exception is the 154 grain Wolf load.
I think it would punch through a Buffalo with no problem so it is what I use in my 7.62 rifles.

I am currently loading Hornady 170gr FN and picked up a couple boxes of Winchester 150gr PP's.
In the future I am considering casting boolits for my '94, how do you think a cast would do on mr. piggy??

I agree 150 or 170 FN or PP or Corelokts will work just great.  I tried Hornady leverrevolutions and that done poorly.  The flex tips broke apart after impact mostly.  Of course it was a 750# boar! The hog had 2" of fat and when they hit the shield they stopped.  I think a hard controlled bullet is the best.

So then a nice lead cast boolit would do in a hog nicely?

  Seen an SKS used many times and it did just find. Not sure of the load but they were hollow points. Barnaul maybe?

Can't speak to large hogs or long distances, but I can tell you I have taken hogs up to 200 lbs at distances to 80 yards with Wolf 154 sp 7.62x39. They drop just like the ones I have taken with 7-08 140's and 30-06 165's. Hit them right and they will go down.

I often take my youth group from my Church on hog hunts, and their weapon of choice is the AK 47. It has taken more hogs than all the rest of my guns combined. I have a lot of guns and I've killed a lot of hogs.

Take one one day and the other the next.  They're both fine, unless you're hunting longer ranges (over 150yds for those calibers).  I take most of my hogs with a .223 because everything else, except my .30 carbine destroys too much meat.
