25-06 Crimp?
« on: August 20, 2009, 10:52:13 AM »
Been cheating a couple of years with factory ammo but I'm getting back into reloading and I'm a little rusty - working with my 25-06 (Savage Model 10 Tactical) I'm trying to use up what I have. My pet load used 100gr Rem. Core-Lokt (with 4350) but I'm about out of those. I read somewhere on here, but couldn't find it again, where a guy worked up his load using the Rems and then switched over to Nosler Partitions when the load was about right. I totally understand that as the Nosler's are .50 each but here's my question.... the Rems have a cannelure where the Noslers do not. Should I throw a bit of a crimp on the Nosler anyway, as I would the Rem or no? (Normally I crimped in a separate operation with a Lee die). I may also try 4831 since it appears to be a more popular powder that the 4350 - I have a can of that too. The manuals are all in the cabinet and I know I need to dig them out again - just taking a short cut by getting some educated advice!

Thanks

I don't in a bolt gun , BTW i use the 100 gr Ballistic tip for deer and have had good results . Got some part. and will be working up a load for them when i get time . I use 4831 if i remember , will check at home . I think it was 53 gr. but let me check . This has been good in several rifles over the years . Let me check the load .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I only crimp when I have trouble with bullets pulling in the mag. when the rifle is fired and you should not have that problem. I also pay no attention to the cannalure on a bullet. I seat them to where I get the best accuracy. That is usually with the cannalure way infrount of the case.

:D I 'm with Catfish. I never crimp ammo for a bolt, not even my .340 or .375 H & H. I did some crony work with the .25-06 and 100 grain bullets this summer. All were loaded warm, but not max. IMR 4831 was the top at about 3400, just behind was RE 22, them IMR 4350. It came in about 3350 I think. BUT the IMR 4350 was super accurate. I have a little H4831, but not much. So I have moved to these three powders. When the I4831 is gone, I will probably use 22 and 4350 as I have a lot of it. ;)

Like others, I don't crimp many rifle calibers. I don't crimp any for bolt guns sans the dangerous game stuff. Most of my crimping in rifle calibers is done for reliable feeding in tube feed lever action rifles. Even then that's more for a durability stand point.

Crimping for bolt guns is not wrong, just generally not necessary and offers little to no advantage.

Well, did some experimenting with bullets, powders and crimp/no crimp...

Nosler 100 gr Partitions, 4350, no crimp - and you can cover a 100yd 5 shot group with a nickel. I have a new pet load!

Thanks

With the scarcity of components right now, they don't have much on their website but Nosler Shooters Pro Shop does offer factory seconds for reasonable prices that make it a little easier on the billfold.
Just something to keep in mind if you find a liking for the Nosler bullets.
