naval cannon
« on: September 20, 2009, 04:42:16 PM »
thought I would show you my naval cannon.
nothing fancy by any means.
however the sheriff that showed up at my house one evening
knew what it was when I showed it to him.
one of the neighbors thought I was shouting fireworks
.5 inch bore, .5 inch walls, 12 inches long..
second attempt at making a cannon

Looks like LOTS of fun is in order.

We'd love to see some pix of smoke and flame now!   Might even want to put up a target!

breech has a steel plug press fit into the barrel. drilled thru one wall and the plug, and inserted a steel tension pin. I know one of the preferred methods is to tap the barrel, then screw a bolt in, and weld. I just didn't have the capability do that at the time.  the welding was done by a friend who works where they do metal fabrcation. I would not have trusted my welding skills on this.

shooting strictly blanks. well a small amount of paper wading to hold the powder in.
do not feel comfortable shooting projectiles were I live. also seems much less threatning to the sheriff when he stops by asking questions.  :D

If you let the sheriff shoot it; he might be the one to suggest:"Wonder what it would be like to try and hit a can with some kind of bullit in it. Wanna try?"  Your reply would be: "You first. If you blow it up, you owe me another."    ;D

After letting the sheriff take a couple of turns, he might suggest you build a bigger one, too! Maybe he would be comfortable with one say, a golf ball size bore? Lots bigger "BOOM"! Just a word of caution, if you go out shooting golf balls, watch your backdrop, they have a way of coming back at you! LOL Probably be safe with a sand pile as your backstop....BoomLover

I would like to make a larger cannon. Am in the process of making a golf ball mortar.
However from some reading of posts here, golf balls may not be the best projectiles.
Have a tendacy to slice or hook a little distance down range. Very much like the ones I hit with my driver. ;D  Sometime I intend to make a larger cannon, with the carriage, and wheels, etc.
always interested in a BIGGER BOOM! :D
