Bottles for gun cleaning solvents
« on: February 05, 2003, 06:00:55 AM »
Ok, maybe I'm a cheapskate, but I hate is when I have to dip my patches in the Butch's Boreshine and Hoppe's No. 9 bottles and completely soake the patch, only to have it squeezed out when I run it down my bore guide and it drips all over.  I've looked at buying solvent bottles, but they're $3 a piece and I had a brilliant thought last night.  I wear contacts and go through the solution bottles constantly.  Most are 2-8 oz. bottles, perfect for cleaning solvents, right?  So would the gun solvents eat the plastic in my used solution bottles or would they work perfectly?  If I used them, I'd have a tip on it so I can put the solvent exactly where I want it and control the amount that goes on the patch without wasting it, they are sealed so it won't evaporate out, and I've already paid for them.  Am I crazy or brilliant, what do you think?

Selmer,
I dont thank that is not a real good idea, you are working with chemicals and federal law requires them to be labeled with cretin information. Not to mention that the cleaners are designed to dissolve plastics so over a period of time the chemicals will eat trough the plastic bottles (they are not designed for solvents)
What I do is use an old glass eye dropper the plastic ones will work too because they are not constantly exposed to the chemicals and clean them well after use

Try a French's mustard container the yellow one with the plastic twist tip.  A friend of mine has a glass shop and stores naptha in these for various reasons.  I have been meaning to try this with #9.

I use the old Russian army issue bottle - round, brass, flat flask with two sections and two screw caps. I keep bore cleaner in one section and Ballistol in the other.  You can pick them up for $5.00 at gun shows.  They work great and look right in a black powder possibles bag.

Second choice is the current US issue plastic lube botlle.  Has a drip spout which is good for application - about $2.50.

Selmer, I think you have a good idea since I have been doing the same with my wifes empties. They work real good and haven't been eaten up as yet. I have been doing this for a couple of years now. If you don't do something and are like me you waste more than you really use. Looks like the people that make the various cleaners would package them as so. I guess if you waste it you will just buy more. I am CAL....
