Africa: What to take?

Fellow Encore-lovers,

If you were going to Africa, what would you take on your Encore?
- Caliber(s)
- Optics/Sights
- Long or Short barrel
- how many?

I'd love to hear from anyone else that's done it already.

I should think a 416 for the really nasty stuff, full length of course (26" encore), for the rest I think the carbine length would suffice 18" - 21", the Katadyhn carbines are a good choice but I think you could make do with a 308 for a close in brush gun. sounds like fun, someday, R

Well, contract fell through so looks like I'm not going after all. But it sure was a fun daydream! Just got to find me another contract in Africa.

It seems like 458 Lott, 416 Rigby and 375HH are the favorites in the non-Encore forums; I'd like to know what the felt difference would be between an Encore and say a Ruger #1 Tropical in 375HH. The Ruger weighs in at 9lbs out of the box, while the Encore with a 24" factory barrel weight in at 6lb 12oz out of the box. Easier to carrier, but maybe not as comfortable to shoot? I've never held a Ruger #1 myself.

Without the scope wgt., A 375 HH 300 gr. @ 2575 fps = 9# ruger- Impulse 4.7 lbs/sec, Free Velocity 16.7 fps, Free Energy 39 ftlbs.  Encore 4.1 19.6 40.1 respectively
Some say it's FV that gets your attention, more than the FE. And that 16 fps is the threshold for most.
