Pictures of Valley and Hide
« on: September 19, 2009, 09:01:30 AM »
Here are pictures of the valley we were hunting in and pictures of the hide.  I got to the tanney too late Thursday morning to see the hide before the head was skinned out.  by the time I got there the skinner had skinned it out and salted the hide.  The skinned head was in the freezer so it would not spoil before they could clean it down to the skull.

The salted hide

The left paw and claws

The valley we ere in from the blind.  The spot the bear was in is the little clearing off to the left above the lake.  Not the clearing around the lake, the little clearing off by itself above and to the left of the lake.  Wish I knew how to put an arrow on the photo.  Rog

OR-E-Gun Bill:  Yes, that's the spot.  The gut pile is out in the middle of that little meadow, the only high and dry spot in the meadow.  The water is about 8" deep over the rest of the meadow.  After the first shot the bear went straight to the spruce trees.  My second shot anchored it at the tree line.  PM me on how you did that if you don't mind.

Al at the Tannery said it is a 6FT bear, that is all I can tell you.

Oldshooter:  It is something like 620 yards to the meadow from the blind.  The picture was made from the blind.  The corrected yardage due to the 22deg angle was 567 yards.

My partner was looking at the bear through his scope when I made the shot.  He had a new 14 power scope on his rifle.  He had cranked it up to 14 power.  Every time his heart beat the cross hairs moved 5 to 6 feet.  He found that to be really distracting.

The Beaver Dam at the end of the big pond is about 10 feet high.  It's holding back over 8 feet of water.  Think of the pressure on that dam.  And that it was built by a Rodent.

Rog, Great pictures and good shooting. What scope and power was it set on when you made that shot? Also what reticle. What are you after next and when. Can't wait to hear about it. Sounds like your practicing paid off. Good Luck!

I use a Night Force 3.5X15X50 NSF scope.  I have the NP-R2 Reticle.  I had it set in 15X.  And yes everytime my heart beat the scope cross hairs jumped 5 to 6 feet to the right as well.  But I have been practicing for this shot, and timing is everything.  I time the shot to be consistent with the return of the cross hairs to the neutral position back left.

Rog, Sounds like you have a good set up and know how to use it. I've looked at Nightforce and hope to have at least one someday. You are lucky to live in an area that wide open with few people. Here you can hardly get permission anywhere. Thanks for the info. Enjoy!  Mike

What caliber/cartridge did you use at that range?  Based on your previous posts, probably a 338 WM.

For Wolves and smaller stuff I use a 30-06 Handi.  For bigger stuff like this Grizzly I use a .338/378 Weatherby.

The only thing I have done to the Handi has been put an O-ring under the forearm, mount the scope and shoot it.  The more I shoot it the better it gets.

The Weatherby, I just mounted the scope, (major problem here, ruined three base plates and sets of rings trying to hold down that 2 pound scope) and shoot it.  Aside from the scope mounting problem, nothing done to the gun itself since it left the factory.

It snowed today but did not stick.  Expecting more tomorrow, but again not expecting it to stick.  Daytime temps are too warm yet, upper 40s and mid 50s.
