change of formula
« on: October 04, 2009, 01:17:36 PM »
I think that the formulation of 777 has been changed?
no matter how fine I make it even down to dust,
my flintlock will not ignite it now? Blackpowder is almost impossible
to find in my area. THIS SUCKS! I guess I gotta make my own again.

triple7 will not work in a flintlock, especially in the pan.  Ive had good luck with Pyrodex P as the main charge and then priming the touchhole with 4g goex, it did pretty good but nothing is better than the real black stuff.  You can order black powder  5lbs minimum online.

I ordered real black powder from powder inc or something like that delivered. I ordered 5# so the hazmatt fee was minimul per pound. Mike

When I get short on bp I use a duplex load.I prime with bp and use approximately ten grains under the main load of pyrodex or other.Make sure to reduce your main charge by the amount of bp that you use as the base.

S.S. are you saying that 777 used to work in your flintlock?  If so that is surprising.

after I crushed it down smaller with a wooden dowel it would work.
It is a sure no-go with what I have now. even with black powder in the pan
and 777 as the charge it does not work right. It is ignited by the blackpowder but it
shoots a flame out the touchhole like a bottle rocket for a second before firing.
Not tried with my matchlock yet but I would assume the results will be about the same.

It really is well worth the bother and expense to order up some Goex or Graf's black powder. If you order at least five pounds then even with the hazmat shipping it will be cheaper per pound than T7 and in every way better as well.

SS, I think humidity really affects Triple 7 much more than real black powder.  Here in East Texas the humidity is usually very high.  My flintlock is more reliable using real black than my percussion rifles are using Triple 7.  Like Coyotejoe said you can order Goex from http://powderinc.com or http://www.grafs.com/ in as little as 5 pound lots and still come out cheaper than Pyrodex or Triple 7.  You can also mix the granulations in the order of 5 pounds.
