2-3/4" slug in 3" bore????
« on: September 24, 2009, 04:28:36 AM »
OK, this is a pretty basic question... Can I safely shoot 2-3/4" slugs in my 3" Bore Ultra II 20ga rifled barrel?  Also, do I have to use the expensive sabot slugs ($12 for 5), or can I break the barrel in with cheap 2-3/4" Remington Sluggers or something similar?
Thanks - Ron

Opps, I have a Tracker II 20ga barrel, not an Ultra.
Thanks - Ron

rifled barrels were designed for shooting sabots and work pretty good with them, smoothebore barrels are for use with rifled slugs to put a spin on slug for better results, from what I've seen some people do that used slugs in rifled barrels the slugs load up the grooves with lead and change your accuracy from poor performance. cheap is almost never better but you can find some reasonable sabots if you shop around, myself I'd only shoot the sabots I intend to use for hunting and just shoot less of them til the prices come in line.

I rescoped my sons 20ga recently, bore sighted then roughed it in with foster slugs accuracy was gone after 6 or 7 shots. after a good cleaning started shooting sabots and have it clover leafing at 75 yds.

With respect to your first quetion, Yes you can use 2 3/4 in your 3 inch chamber. I do, in my Ultra 20 and my Mossberg 500. In fact my Mossberg has never seen a 3" shell. I have used it now for over 10 years, no problems.

Thanks everyone,
I guess I'll just use sabots.  I thought I saw some at Gander  in 2-3/4" that were a little cheaper than the 3".  I can't afford too money much breaking in the barrel.  I have a couple rifle barrels I am breaking in now, too.  So many barrels...I guess it's a good problem to have!

What's all this talk about breaking in a slug barrel? How many rounds are you planning to fire to break it in? I must not have learned about that.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun
