Another pistol cartridge handi
« on: September 13, 2009, 06:31:12 AM »
I don't know if this has come up before, but now that we have had the 500 S&W for a while in the Handi, why not a 460 S&W.  Wider bullet selection and larger case capacity by a bit anyway.  Could the Handi take it?  I would think so if the 500 is ok.  Any thoughts?   Rich

Someone on here reamed a 45LC to 460S&W. if they make one I'd buy one. It would be really cool if they made a 460 just like the 45LC straight stock buffalo classic.

I've got one, still working on an accurate load, the Hornady factory 200gr does almost 2900fps, 2-3" 100yd groups, same for the 250gr SST.

I used to own a 45/410 barrel that would chamber a 460 S&W but I never was dumb/drunk enough to try firing one in it even though it was on a SB2 frame. The barrel on the 45/410 is softer than the rifle barrels. The 460 should be a real stomper on hogs and such!UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WOULD I RECOMMEND FIRING A 460 IN A 45/410

I think that alot of their motivation comes from states like Indiana who have recently permitted deer hunters to use pistol caliber rifles.  Unfortunately Indiana has limited the length of the cartridges to allow the .500 S&W, but not the .460 S&W.  If that were to change, we would see an increase in the demand for that caliber and perhaps an increase of varying calibers.

Thanks, Dinny

Quick,  Did Wayne York do a rebore/chamber for you?  If so, what did you start with?  I ask because I don't see .452 in his list of rebores.

No, did it myself by hand with a rented reamer on a 45 Long Colt BC Carbine barrel, CW did one to Casull.  ;)

Thanks, even with +P Colt data I got over 1900fps with 250gr jacketed bullets, so it's no slouch in standard form.  ;D

YUP!!  I went to 454 with a rented reamer same as Tim. I have shot it some with very good accuracy results, but sorry, no chrono loads yet.

I'm not after top loads in mine, just lite 454 heavy 45 COLT for whitetails here in New England.

It looks like Tim's is a standard SB2 frame - not the BC 45LC case-colored variety.  I assume you have to go to the SB2 to be safe on the pressures??   ???-Rich

The BC frame is the same investment cast alloy steel SB2 frame as a Handi, it just has a faux case coloring.

Hey Tim,

The 460 S&W bullet is .452.  Do you know the grove diameter on the handi 45 LC.  Is it close enough just to ream to right depth for the 460?  I guess one of the things that bothers me about attempting this myself is the possibility of messing up the throat, getting some kind of pinch and creating nasty pressures.  Any thoughts?  Should I just look for a brave gunsmith who would chamber it for me?  So many are afraid of lawsuits nowadays.  Rich

The Colt barrel slugs 4525" in the grooves and .4465" at the lands near the muzzle, the 460 S&W uses .451" or .452" bullets, I've only shot .452" so far, but I have some .451" XPBs to run thru it some day.
