getting ready for winter
« on: October 17, 2009, 08:16:03 AM »
I changed the oil in my Griz with Mobil 1 10w40 motorcycle oil and installed a NGK iridium spark plug.
Has anyone used a 100 watt light to keep your engine warmer for faster warm ups? I've used a 100 watt bulb in a work light to keep my truck battery warm before and it worked pretty good.

I live in Mich and its about as cold as it gets here and never had a problem starting an atv even in the dead of winter. Sometimes wished my snowmobiles started as easy as my atvs!

I ride mine all year so it gets fresh gas. I put Lucas fuel system cleaner in the gas cans before filling and Stabil in the cans for winter (even though I still ride it.

My Honda is stored in a shed from January until September most years.  If the battery holds up, it will always crank.  What I have to check is the air box.  Mice have been known to nest in mine.

I connect a battery tender to my ATV as soon as I put it up.

Over the years I've had 3 diff ATV out in the worst northern Minnesota has. Temps have been down to -20 degrees overnight and the key is a warm battery for sure. All I do is take the battery into the cabin with me at night since it's a long walk out for me. They have always started.

I insist on having a pull start, I have stayed away from fuel injected. The smaller the engine the easier they start I think. Current model I have is a twin 700 with pull start...like I say the key I think. When it's real cold I only use the pull start, it just seems to fire better.

It doesn't get very cold where I live in Texas, just good and chilly, usually low 40's, sometimes at or just below freezing.
