205X50 Breech Plug

Am I correct in thinking that the earlier version of the breechplug (deep dish w/o ledge) is the best choice for loose powder?  It seems to me that this plug would have some advantage (maybe slight) over the more recent plugs designed for pellets that have a ledge and a smaller diameter dish.  Whadyathink?

Go direct to Randy Wakeman on this one. He had a recent post that described all three Encore breech plug versions in detail. I believe the most recent is the concave with a lip that you describe. I believe that shoots best with 777. He can tell you what you want to know.

Dogcreek, you be correct about the original - supposedly it is the best for loose powder.  Stage 2 turned out not to be the best for anything and stage 3 is the best compromise for loose and pellets.

I just picked up a new 209 X 45 a few weeks ago with a 1:28 twist barrel. I'm going to assume that it has the newest #3 plug. I also got an extra plug that I want to do some mods to. They are essentially the same.

What I get for meaurements on the leading edge, unthreaded area, facing the powder charge, of the plug are,
outside diameter, 0.614
hole inside diameter, 0.358
hole depth at center by hole, using flat edged depth mic, 0.357

Now, the bore of my rifle land to land is 0.4495 measured with a mic.

That means the "shelf" they are talking about, that is supposed to keep the pellets from crushing is only about, 0.046 wide.
How does that, lets call it 0.050  "ledge" keep the pellets from crushing ??? If anything it would cause a problem. The shelf would have to be sustantially wider, like 0.100, IMO.
Maybe I have 2 of the originals here and not a new style ??
I am planning on shooting loose powder, so it really wouldn't make a difference to me. But for those of you shooting pellets, it would.

If anyone else out there has time to measure their plugs, please post your results. As I am interested in knowing exactly what the differences are between the first and third generation plugs.

I already know what the second is because I have a friend that just picked up the same rifle and has a 2nd generation plug with the dish.

Stay Safe,
Franz

What you have sounds more like the 2nd stage plug.  The first has a more evenly concave depression which sounds like the one your friend has.  The third has a much wider flat surface with a deep concave in the center that occupies about half the forward face of the plug.

Randy's pictures would give you a better knowledge, but he seems to have taken those down from his storage space.
