A lot depends upon the kind of hunt. Tacking eland, buffalo, elephant for a whole day on foot requires different needs then using the bakkie to spot and stalk, or sitting in a hide for the evening.
I prefer my hunters use a waist pack or what Americans call a "fanny pack" not a good name for this in RSA, but that's another story. These types of packs are cooler to walk with, limit the amount packed along, and do not make nearly the noise going under and around the brush while stalking that a back pack does.
Archery hunters have different requirements then gun hunters too. We almost always see first time hunters bringing about 2X what they need. It's like a survival expedition for many of them. My hunters don't even need a knife. I have staff for all skinning needs.
Leather gloves, field glasses, bug repelent, sunscreen can be put on at camp and left behind. Range finder for archery hunters. gun hunters in the bush don't need a range finder, long shots are gonna be 150 yards. In some areas for some species this is more important. If hunting til dark, a head lamp is a great tool. having hands free to navigate the bush is nice. Mole skin for a random blister is always good. once your feet are blistered you will battle the rest of the trip. Chap stick, sunglasses, a few extra shells, Toilet paper, I have a leatherman tool that always comes along. Asprin tablets, I also have eye drops, because my eyes strain easily and it's always dusty.
All of this is a little tiny package easily fitted into that "fanny pack" add a camera, and a bottle of water and you should be set for an afternoon hunting in most conditions. As a PH I have skinning knives, surveyor tape, and a Garmin GPS. Oh yeah, I have a set of tweezers with an attached magnifying glass in there as well. It's been nice to help pull out thorns from myself and my clients many times!
