Need load data: 170 gr. LSWC and 357 mag
« on: September 16, 2009, 05:05:43 PM »
Thinking about using these for deer in my S&W M66, 6" SS. but no load recipes in Lee, Speer, or Hornady books I have at home. Anyone care to point me in the right direction? Thanks.

I have unique, titegroup, and bullseye and would like to use one of these since I already have the powder and this is likely to be a run of maybe 50 rounds.
this is a hard cast lead projectile.

Data is in the Lyman manual. It's the ONE MANUAL no loader should be without especially if you shoot cast.

I have a plinking load that uses 5.0 grains of Unique.  It is a very mild, yet accurate load.  You need to confirm with a load manual tho to confirm for your gun.

The Alliant manual:

Lists the 158 gr LSWC with 6.0 grains of Unique.

Ya really need that Lyman manual

This is the project I had for last winter-S&W 19 and cast bullets. Only looking for at or about 1100 fps.
Used the 358156 with and without gas check, 358429 and the RCBS Cowboy 158gr mold ( can't remember the number, sorry). Tried Bullseye, 231, unique, 296 and 2400.
My best results were with the 170 gr Keith and 2400.

2400 is the classic powder to use with a 170 Keith SWC in a 357 Magnum.
12 to 14 grains, but you better look it up.
Unique will work, but you will get more velocity with 2400.

2400 -- 9.7 grains starting, 13.5 max listed in Lyman's 49.

I have used 11 grains and 12 grains with good results.  Don't feel the need to push em all to the limit.
