Thinking out loud
« on: September 08, 2009, 02:52:09 PM »
Got a question for someone who knows more than I do. Lets say you have a 12 gauge barrel cylinder bore 18 1/2 long. You want to use the foster type slugs. What kind of energy would you have out to say about 50 or 60 yards? Thanks

Not sure about energy but i have killed three deer at that distance with an old shotgun that fit that description. Two were dead right there. I ran about 20 yards. I think it was all the energy that was needed.

My Federal 12 ga 3" slugs lists 2140 FT/Lbs energy at 50 yards. Remington 2 3/4 lists at 1923 FT/lbs at 50 yards for solid sabot. Rem Ultras 2 3/4 at 2682 FT/lbs.  The regular sluggers range from 1300 to1600.
These all will get the job done.

Even a 20ga will get it done at 50yds, if you do your part.  I took a small buck 3 yrs ago at about 60 yds with my Tracker I and Remington Sluggers.  It wasn't a "Bang-Flop" because my shot placement wasn't quite right, but it didn't run because I severed its spine.  Your 12ga will do just fine, provided you do your part.
Good hunting.
