Table of Brass
« on: March 10, 2012, 07:36:48 PM »
Some of you may have seen my post or even donated unsafe non-useable brass in this forum www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,253463.0.html

As said in that post I plan on making a table in this thread im going to update and track my progress.

So far many people are donating brass, so waiting on arrival of that, i have a 30" in diameter 1/4" thick piece of glass.

I have been testing adhesives on test glass with brass, nickel, steel, and aluminum.

So far standard superglue works holds very tight but any glue that touches air turns white.

Ill post a pic later today of the test with 2-.357 sigs and a 20 ga w/o primer.

So here are the pics of the test with superglue. Like I said the superglue that touched the air had frosted and left an ugly white ring. In the case of the 20ga you can really see it with the primer out.

When I first attached them the glue was crystal clear. I'm in the process of getting samples of a few different epoxies, and encasement materials.

I will keep it posted.

Oh and as for the the M3 Tripod, I don't think I will be able to come up with the materials to make it. So it might possibly be just  a standard base made from oak or something like that.

I'd recommend you try clear silicone.  We use it to attach things to glass at work a lot.  Especially framing.  It'll become basically invisible in thin layer.  Another good way to do brass tables, (seen one before) or coin tables is to get them all lined up in a recess in the wood, then pour polyacrylic in over them and let it dry clear.  Then put your glass piece on top of that loose, so it can be removed for transport.  ;)

I like the silicone but its to soft for me, im looking for something with solid hold to attach the brass to the glass then frame out the glass with a metal band then pour an encasement material about 2" thick.  that would make the table top about 2 1/4". And be able to the brass from all sides.

Just a thought.  Have you thought of cutting all the cases to a specific length and attaching them to a board with the case head up with epoxy and when completed merely set the glass over the top?  You would eliminate the problem of oxidized adhesive discoloring the glass.

That was my original plan but I wanted it to be viewable from all sides including the bottom. And I wanted them to have added functionality like the .50BMG my companies owner is donating (shot from his .50) will be what is used to attach the top to the base. I will cut the 50's just below the neck and run either dowel rods or aluminum tubing into them and then out to the base.

Does anyone know where I can get a spent 40 MM Granade round? I would like to use it as the center piece of the table and have everything come out from there.

Can locate dummy 40mm grenades sometimes.  ;)  Might check local Army Surplus also, probably cheaper too.  ;)

I added the .22 lr's and .22 shorts around the rim of the glass btw it takes 384 .22's to go around a piece of glass that is 30" in diameter.

ok so if any one knows about the storms that ripped threw here you'll understand.

I had the table set up im my back building ( around 1000+ rounds on it ). Apparently my back building has gaps some where because after the 95-100 mph winds on 6-29 ( that took out two good sized oak trees that fell blocking the road.) I opened up my building to find ALL but one lonely 17hmr shell scattered EVERYWHERE!!!! I didnt think took take pics just because i had an entire fridges contents to throw away and find some way to remove the tree.

But my sample for the epoxy finally showed up.

Heres a pic of the trees. My house is on the white one on the left behind the tree lol. Oh you cant tell but we (me and my wife) were rear ended at an out traffic light that friday also. Rough couple weeks YAY OHIO!!! LOL

Ok so I haven't had much time to work on the table due to workin 7 days a week 9-10 hr days also doin physical therapy from the crash. But I have collected what I think is all the brass that was on the table before the storm lol.

Here is where I'm at.. I tested the epoxy sample I got from Epoxy ect. it works great with clean brass but I cant do it with the dirty/worn brass. So now I'm looking for an easy way just clean the heads so they will adhere. but i only want to do the heads so I can keep the worn look from the bottom and side view.

I'm open to suggestions. I was thinkin about six inch polishing wheel on a bench grinder but I don't have one nor can I afford one right now I'm really strapped for cash.

Btw here is a pic and thank you all for all the help!!!!

so I took all the brass off to clean the glass. While everything was off I weighed all the brass and glass. The brass alone weighed 25lbs 3oz and the glass weighed 14lbs 8oz .

All in all the total weight of the table is 39lbs 11oz. I think i my not add anymore just the .22 lr around the rim of the glass.

I held it all up at the center and no cracking or bowing.

I think im going to just paint the part that is not going to be covered in brass.

Im thinkin a US Flag background any other ideas?

Just for a heads up, you can clean the brass with a scotch brite pad used to clean pots with, or a Mr. Clean "Eraser" or such like.  It will work fine.

A brass bristle brush works as well.

Interesting project by the way!
