What's the best powder for a 32?
« on: October 03, 2003, 12:40:22 PM »
I've got a CVA 32 cal rifle on the way.  My only experience with muzzleloaders is with 50 cal and I prefer FFG black over Pyrodex RS for that gun.  I know I should use a faster powder like either Pyrodex P or FFFG black for the smallbore.  Which powder should I try first?  I'm going to be shooting both roundballs and conicals to see which the gun prefers.

I have been having good luck with 20grs. T777 fffg. or 25grs.ffg swiss BP.T777 doesnt foul as much as BP but what fouling there is is hard and crusty but not unmanageable. I would buy what is available in your area. You can do alot of shooting on a pound of powder. Good luck.

Didn't know there was any other powder than the true holy black. My .32 flinter shoots the best with 3F new Goex BP. Haven't used any of the faux BP so I couldn't tell ya. It's also a real consistent tack driver with Swiss 3F. I have a lot less fliers with Swiss than I do Goex or KiK. I still have a little Dragon BP left and believe it or not it's on a par with Swiss. The more powders ya try the more fun it is and the better your chances are of hitting on a good load. RR :D

Try some 3fg Swiss. That stuff will flat move a .32 ball and you won't be using much either. I can't tell you about the subs since we don't use them. We pretty much went to Swiss and using up our remaining supply of Elephant. We've got enough powder to keep shooting away for quite sometime before we have to replenish..........

Thanks for the replies.  My local shop had some Goex FFFG in stock so I got a can of it to start.  Do most 32's prefer a .010 or .015 patch with a .310 RB or should I just try both and let the rifle decide?  I'm seeing between 20-38 gr as the recommended load.

like mama says, try some 3F Swiss - you wont be disappointed, it's typically 100fps faster than any of the other powders.

t4t
PS try 45grains and let the rifle decide ball/patch combo. Get some denim from Wallyworld, you'll have a hot little shooter :)
we've all got it coming, kid.........

Sir:  the size of the ball you use in your barrel determines patch size. i use hornady "0" buckshot in both my guns.   because it is hardened and does not deform much in loading i use a .005 patch  as the buckshot is not perfectly round and a few 1000th larger than i would really like.    when i used pure lead commercial buckshot one gun took a .010 patch. to hunt you don't want to fight the loading process.  both guns do very well at 30 yards or so with both 15 and 30 grains of goex 3f.   by the way, at that distance the 15 grain load and roundball will penetrate one side of a new standard 55 gal. drum,  30 grain drives the ball through both sides. if you want to try this, maybe you can get a 12 ga. #0 buckshotshell from a friend to get the shot. note the kind of shot if possible.   a 5 pack of buckshot shells is usually cheaper than a name brand box of rb.   i have not tried the copperplated buckshot.  the 15 grain load will penetrate a 8 lb. groundhog shoulder to hip and exit.  a .380 case holds 15 grains 3f.  i also shoot hornady 32 cal. swaged  hollow base wad cutters with the thin patch and same charges.  they weigh 90 grains and  do very well  and   i thought i might get an advantage in case a deer came by while squirrel hunting.  after much squirrel hunting and field shooting i think  the round ball will do in case the wily whitetail jumps in front of my sights again.  make life easy.  a fired 38 special  case  with 15 or so grains and a patched rb lightly tucked in the case mouth is a great speedloader when you get tired of pouch and horn.     olduvai george.

The rifle will dictate your preferred patch thickness. My husband uses a .015 patch, .310 ball and 25 gr. 3fg swiss. But again every rifle is different and you are going to have to experiment to find out what your rifle likes the best.
