Shooting with Gloves
« on: September 22, 2009, 04:08:06 PM »
Shot a 350 lb boar with my 270 and knew he would be dead when I returned a hour later to load him up. He was not but my dog bayed him and after a short run. All I had with me was my 41 Blackhawk 4.5" barrel. As soon as the dog moved I cocked the hammer and pulled the trigger. Nothing. The dang hammer was caught in the web area of the glove I had on. Quickly came off the glove and the porker when down to a 210 soft point to the neck. Much more effective than the 270 to the ribs. Learned not to were gloves with a single action. I wonder if a Beretta Bisley would be less likely to get caught. You know I need a new back up hunting gun.

I have pistol hunted for deer here in Michigan for many years.  Most seasons are cold enough you have no choice but to wear something.  I use a 'police' type glove.  It is made of thin leather, fits tightly, and ends at the cuff.  I have worn some of these clear through because I have worn them so long.  A tight glove will not usually get in the way.  I can say that as it has never happened to me, but doesn't mean it is impossible, just that these gloves have worked good for me.  I did have an accidental discharge once while hunting because of the reduced feel that the gloves afford.  I was hunting in early morning and heard a deer coming through behind me.  I did my usual 'getting ready'; I cocked the hammer and laid my off hand thumb between the frame and hammer as a safety.  The deer went the other way and when I thumbed the hammer to let it down, I was pressing on the top of the pachmyer grip rather than the hammer.  I pulled the trigger to 'ease' the hammer down thinking I had my thumb on it and the gun discharged.  I had it pointed in a safe direction of course but a quick lesson was learned.  Now I always LOOK first.  44 Man.
No, I don't mind telling on myself if it helps someone else learn from my mistake.

Glad you did not hit yourself. The gloves I had on were cotton. Not very tight. I think a Bisley hammer is shorter and may work better with gloves.

I wear leather gloves when shooting my Ruger or when hunting. I've not had any problems like what you've described. There again, I have always disliked those cotton gloves. I can't get a grip on anything while wearing them.

Not sure if the Bisley hammer will be better or worse! I have several of them, and I know when shooting them in CAS matches the lower hammer on those Bisleys are much more prone to short stroking. That hammer shape will hit the web of your hand with a high grip, and that is without gloves.

I never try to stop someone from getting a new gun, but you may try to find one first before you go with the Bisley. Also, you can simply get a new hammer for your Blackhawk if that is the way you want to go.

I think if I was trying to keep that hammer from getting caught in the web of a glove, higher would be better than lower. For that, you may want to look at the Ruger New Vaquero in 45 Colt. They have a higher hammer to facilitate faster two handed shooting for CAS, and my be just the ticket.

Yea I like the New Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt. Been looking at those also. The blue looks good but the nickle would wear a little better. I like a 45 running about 900fps.

Easy to get 900 fps in the New Vaquero. BTW, they are blue or  polished stainless, not nickel.

All of my single action guns are Bisleys. I use Past Gloves with no problem.

It's ALWAYS cold handgun hunting here in Michigan :'(  I keep a glove on my left hand, the right hand glove in an inside pocket to keep warm, and my bare right hand in a pocket.  I haven't found a thin glove that would actually keep your hands warm.
