swede 6.5x55 mauser safety conversion??
« on: October 06, 2009, 02:29:44 AM »
hello.  i bought a sporterized mauser a while back for my first hunting rifle and now i want to do some more shooting with it.   love the rifle but the three position safety is really hard to rotate positions.  i had asked down at the local gun shop that had a gunsmith shop and they really didnt seem to know if there was any kind of safety conversion kits for them.   is there any kits or mods that can safely be done by the average joe?  thanks.

If that "gunsmith" shop didn't know of any way to convert a Mauser safety I believe I'd be looking for a new gunshop.

I have a Model 96 Swede that among other mods has a wing type safety that was installed by a gunsmith.
Don't know what brand it is, but I'm pretty sure he got the parts from Brownell's.  Mine is similar in operation to a Winchester Model 70 only it's a 2 position and not a 3.

Another option would be to install an aftermarket trigger that includes a safety, however this type in my opinion is not as secure as a safety that locks the firing pin.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Quite a few options for you. Probably most common is the two-position safety that swings like the original, but only on one side, down, and semi-up, so it clears a scope. Several folks make them. Then there are the aftermarket triggers that include a safety, which is a thumb-piece inletted into right side of stock, alongside cocking piece. Then there are the ones that are like the Win. Model 70, that fit into the cocking piece. They are available in two position ( most economical ), and three position. Brownells sells quite a few types. Ed LaPour in Bremerton, Wa. offers the last type I mentioned, he advertises in "rifle". As someone mentioned, if a gunshop or gunsmith doesn't know, stay away from them.

original:  Welcome aboard!  You have a already sporterized Swedish Mauser so why worry about retaining the original safety system.....

I wholeheartedly agree with Spruce about finding another gunshop and mrbigtexan and I have done exactly the same, and I recommend the same to you::get a Bold Trigger with internal safety and replace the Mauser wing safety with one much easier to use and much more condusive for use with a scoped rifle. jmtcw.

I've even modified the original Mauser safety as a two position safety "on the cheap"! I agree with others here that anyone who can't come up with a solution is no gunsmith.

I agree with Mikey, If it has already been Bubba'd AKA sporterized, Most of the collector value is gone.
Might as well go ahead and make it suit what you want. Just remember that however much money
you decide to put into it, it is still just a surplus military rifle. You will probably be disappointed
when and if you start to sell it.

Yes it will work for all the small ring mausers.

If the issue safety is "hard to rotate" then I'll have to ask if someone has already replaced the trigger or has done a "trigger job".  If the face of the sear is moved forwrd, even a small amount, through repalcement or alteration the safety will be hard to engage as it must cam the striker back farther.  A simple replacement of the safety will not help anything.  Either the cam angle and surface of the safety must be lessoned or the rear of the safety engagement notch on the cocking piece must be moved back slightly.  However, since it is already altered an alternative is to simply replace the whole trigger assembly with one that is made to original engagement spects or to get one with the safety as part of the trigger assemply.
