Newbe Help
« on: October 06, 2009, 12:26:14 PM »
Hi guys,
Some of you may know me from some of the other forums
and I have never really been around muzzle loaders and to
be honest, really do not know squat about them.

Recently I won a TC Encore 50 cal on another site
and would like to find a book to read about the basics.

Believe me, I know this site is the best place to get answers
to the questions I will have come up and hope you can tolerate
my ignorance as I learn.

I really would like to read a book to learn terminology and basics
before I start asking dumb questions of you experts.

Suggestions on a book would be appreciated ;)

Thanks
Mike

You probably should start with the Encore Owners Manual.  If you don't have it, check here - http://www.tcarms.com/assets/manuals/current/Encore_Rifle_Manual.pdf  (BE PATIENT, IT'S A LARGE PDF FILE AND WILL TAKE A WHILE TO DOWNLOAD.)

Other than that, I don't know that you can do any better than brousing this forum and a few others like HuntingNet and ModernMuzzleloader.

Thanks Semisane.
I read the PDF and like all gun owners manuals it is more about safety than learning the basics of loads, loading, unloading, tips, accessories ect.
which is more in line of what I am looking for.

Since I won this gun and have very little money in it
I would also like to hear the pros and cons of the Encore.
You will not hurt my feelings and I am looking at it as a way to
get into muzzies and if I really like it I can step up to the pump.
Unfortunately I am sure I will so another hobby to spend $ on ;D

Hold nothing back and let the truth fly ;)

Thanks
Mike

Why would ya want to fool around with one of those piece of shitz? Probably have to screw w/the forend and or the trigger. May-be a scope. Then you'll have all that screwin around tring to find the proper load. Let me save you all that pain an agony. I'll just give ya 300.00 for it tonite.  ;)

Mike,

Safety, safety, safety always comes first, and especially for a green hand like you.   Even folks who have shot modern arms all their life really need to start over learning when they get into muzzies.   Takes a different mindset to use them safely.   I know lots of folks who have shot muzzies for decades, know all the ins and outs of them like me yet still get into trouble with them now and then.   It's easy enough to do.

Sam Fadala's muzzie books are worth a looksee if you want some reading (The Complete Black Powder Handbook, etc).

Play with your Encore (and the play powders/bullets) for a while, and when you find you do like shooting black (which you will) and decide to get a real muzzie (traditional) LMK.   They are a different game than the Encore and a lot more satisfying IMO.

gunrac, I'm not sure how I am managing to not take you up on your offer
guess I must be a gluten for punishment :D

Larry thanks for the feed back my friend.
I think you know me well enough to know
I like to be educated and ask allot of questions
to make the right choices and with safety.
I will check out your reading suggestions.

I will have lots of time to get familiar at least
through research as I am having surgery on my
shoulder Tomorrow and they say no shooting
for 6 months :'(
