I was just surfing the web and came across this forum.  I have to say there is a lot of good information!  A couple days ago I just bought a Ruger 10/22 carbine 22 magnum rifle.  I ordered a scope and am still waiting on it to take it out and shoot.  I also ordered a recoil pad since I thought the stock was a little short for me.  One thing I did notice - I cleaned and oiled it for the first time and noticed that on top of the gun, right under where the scope would be there seemed to be a bit of rust.  Is this common for a new firearm?  I didn't actually see the rust but when I used a white cloth and CLP the cloth turned a bit orange which seems to me to be rust.  I bought it from Sportsmans Warehouse new in the box.  Has anyone seen this before?  It seemed to clean up good so I guess I won't complain or return it.

BadddDoggg,

I own five 10/22's, two 77/22's and have never had that problem.  Don't know what it could be, rust or packing sealant or what?  What I wanted to do was welcome you to Graybeard Outdoors.  The best forum for hunters/shooters of every type.  Most generally if you ask a question here you'll get an answer, generally more than one.  I'm hoping you'll post often and keep us informed on what you find out about your 10/22.  Again, Welcome Aboard.  Lawdog

welcome,
My last rifle I bought new was a Marlin 17 hmr and the bolt and barrel were slightly rusty and had some dark grey residue (sp?) too.  I cleaned it up and didn't think much of it till you said something.  You would think that a thin coat of oil would be put on it or something.
Don't say whoa in a bad place

Rust on New 10/22
« Reply #3 on: October 04, 2003, 06:12:35 AM »
Thanks for the warm welcome!  Yea, I'm surprized about the rust.  I did buy the rifle from a large gun store that had TONS of rifles in stock.  Perhaps the 10/22 magnums don't sell as fast as the others and these had been in inventory a while.  I just used some BreakFree CLP lubricant and it seemed to clean up quite well.  This is my first rifle but I do have three handguns, a 22lr, 45 auto and Desert Eagle 44 magnum.  All of the handguns that I bought new were packed in thick grease-like packing and wrapped in a plastic bag.  The rifle was in a plastic bag but the metal appeared to be dry with no oil at all.  It was brand new in the box and you could tell it had never been opened.  It's funny, I bought this gun to shoot the magpies that had been picking on my father-in-laws sheep but it seems the west nile virus has killed most of them off!  Now I'll have to go turkey hunting or something!

I also welcome you and keep us posted on that magnum on how she shoots.    Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
