Fort Walton Gunade
« on: September 28, 2009, 11:20:05 AM »
Hello All,
I just returned from Florida and spotted this Gunade in Fort Walton Beach.  It is 6' long with a 5 1/4" bore at the muzzel.  I couldn't really tell if it was cupped.  Does anyone know if 5 1/4" equals an 18 pounder?  It had no markings.  It is spiked but the bore is clear.  The plaque called it a carronade but it has trunnions.

I forgot to add that as wicked as these guns were I don't think it would have made a very good coastal defense gun.  Maybe that's why they buried it.

Zulu,

That diameter bore size would make it an 18-pounder.

Zulu, nice pics...I don't want to nit-pic, but on my screen that meaurement looks to be 5 1/2", instead of 5 1/4". Probably just my screen! BoomLover

I agree about being a poor coastal defense gun but it would make a dandy "flank howitzer" in a coastal fort.

I think they were made in 32 pounders and maybe 64 pounders.  Any comments?
