Question on care of fired brass.
« on: October 08, 2003, 07:46:32 AM »
I think I read somewhere that once you fired you should treat brass before storing. I do not reload now but plan to start. I bought 500 .45 cowboy loads. Made by winchester. Being as how my name is not gates I need to conserve. I want to save this brass.
Also do I need differant cleaning supplys for the smoke-less rounds rather than my c&b cleaning gear. All help appreciated.

Treating fired brass is dependent upon what you fired in it.  If it's smokeless, I throw it in a coffee can and collect enough to tumble in my vibrator before reloading.  Best is to presort by caliber.  If the powder was black or a substitute, the brass should be washed in vinegar water before storing to neutralize the fouling.  Cleaning supplies, I use MP7 solvent on smokelss and black, but smokeless leads significantly more, so I also have a Lewis Lead Remover. (See Brownells).  Hoppes9 is good if you shot jacketed bullets.

I clean, Size, and Prime my brass and then store it in ziplock bags untill I'm ready to use it.  KN
