Supposed to get Frost Tonight!
« on: September 29, 2009, 03:12:12 AM »
Well the weather man just said bring in your plants and cover the ones you can't. There is Frost Coming Tonight!
I did the NTA convention trip and enjoyed my self at it and our state convention. I've even been getting things squared away in the garage and sorted some traps.
But for some reason I'm just not to fired up yet about going in the field. I do plan to get out this week and start on permissions. Maybe a little frost will light a fire under my butt?? Right now though I feel like I'm coasting.
Roughly three weeks out till the start of our coon season.

Where are you located? I haven't heard anything about frost yet, but the cool temps have me raren to go set some steel. Been holding off on squirrell hunting until the first frost as I was told thats when the warbles leave the squirrells. Sat in my tree stand deer hunting the other day and counted over half a dozen squirrells around me. Was even tempted to take a shot at one with my recurve, but didn't want to spook everything in the area.

I'm in west central WI at La Crosse.
The sky got dark and wind started whipping pretty good here Sunday afternooon mixed with some rain. The temperature dropped pretty well along with the wind kicking up. They say now it's going to clear off and get cold tonight. I actually live in town where it is generally a few degrees warmer than the out lying areas. If we actually get frost here in town, they will probaly get hit good out of town.
I'm supposed to go for a little dive in the river tonight so I should get a river temp reading. I watch the paper here all the time for the river temp. But they take it as a surface reading and cold water sinks. I doubt true turn over has started in most our area waters. But some of the smaller waters I would think temps are dropping quickly.

Well the river was a balmy 58 degrees last night and there was actually pretty good visibility. Our training plan was to search for a radio dropped in by one of the local fire departments. We didn't find the radio, but the other diver I was with found a car. So I didn't get home till around 9:30 time we got the police and wrecker there. The car had obviously been in the water for some time. It was covered in zebra mussels and caked full of mud when it came up. Neat thing was the critters that had made this thing their home. When the wrecker got the car winched up the boat ramp we found several mud puppies. Mud puppies aren't that rare here on the river, but I don't recall seeing any number of them in one spot in years. We put all the ones that bailed out of the car back in the river. I'm guessing there could be more headed to the storage yard that won't find their way back.
All my photo's are old school 35mm so they are still in the camera. I think one of the other team members got some mud puppy photo's on digital. For those who have never seen a mud puppy I'll see can I get a picture e-mailed to me to post.

Do coons prime this early in your area?

No Larry. The big old boars will start to look good at the end of October, but the young ones take a bit more time. The last to prime are the sowa that have raised a litter. This year it is important to wait as long as possible to harvest your coon.

Big time frost in NE Wisconsin this morning. Wife forgot to take some plants in last night. They're deader than a door knob today.

Tom

I haven't trapped in a long time.  Used to back in the early 70's, when I was a kid, coon and fox.  Made more then my old man did, bragged about it, and ended up being the only 13 year old I knew who had to pay rent for 2 months each trapping season..  Coons were bringing about $20 for a good, prime boar, and fox were about $45, if I remember right.  Big bucks in 1970's dollars.  I quite when the market for fur crashed in the later 70's.  What does a good coon pelt bring these days?

Larry, with the big economic down turn--finding #10.00 coon, may be a challenge.
Though it sounds like Rats should be in the $3.00 and $4.00 range.
Nothing new in the fur trade--up and down--up and down.

Tom
I dipped some traps yesterday afternoon while the temp was up. There still on a rack on my drive and I need to get them inside because it's supposed to rain here soon.
As for coon priming I would say pretty much what you said. I find the most of boars are not in to bad a shape after mid October with the sows and little ones taking shape a little later. I plan to get out the first week of season for coon mostly because that is when I have the time. I like to get after the rats before I have to deal with to much ice.
I don't believe we got zinged to much by the frost here in town, but it is way cool.

One of the other dive team members is supposed to be sending me a picture of a mud puppy so I'll post it when I get it. The car we found was stolen from St Paul area back in 2001.

We got frost here in southern Ohio and there was even ice on the water bucket this morning. We didn't turn the heat on although all the kids whined about it for a while. Going to go out and check all my gear to make sure I'm ready come november. Got a new (to me) boiling barrel from my buddy the other day and need to weld up the screw holes in it before I can burn it out real good. I want to have it ready so I can use it to clean dirty traps during the season. I've pretty much given up on dip as I don't want to have to wait for it to dry, espeacially during the season when the extra traps will be needed.

26 degrees here this morning with a heavy frost covering everything, so thick I thought it was snow when I first looked outside breaking daylight. Asa
