Wipeout Bore Cleaner comments
« on: October 29, 2003, 06:43:11 AM »
I've just tried out this new Wipe Out bore cleaner. I have a little info to report and was hoping for feed back.

Bought 2 cans after seeing ads in Rifle and Handloader Mag. A local serious shooter tried it and liked it so I tried it.

The stuff doesn't smell, is supposed to be noncorrosive and supposedly out -cleans everything else. Supposed to remove nearly all fouling except lead. My 300 win hasn't been shooting well and seems to need more and more cleaning so I started there.

After doing what I thought was a very thorough job using lots of Sweets and Butch's Bore Shine, I tried the Wipe Out. You can soak the bore overnight without harm according to the info. supplied. It took me 3 nights before the patch came out with no sign of copper and much of the bore seemed smoother - less fouling?

I haven'd shot the gun to see if it helped, and won't be able to for a couple weeks. But I was very impressed how much more copper came out.

I like that it doesn't stink or have the standard nasties found in Shooters Choice and the like. I'm nervous that it says its low pH but claims to be noncorrosive. Low pH means acidic in my understanding. I wish there were a little more info on just what the active agents are and how to be sure to neutralize it. I've inquired with the company but haven't received an answer yet (1 day wait so far). Owner Paul has been pretty responsive to my other emails.

The stuff is a little tricky to manage. Its in a pressure can and comes out like shaving cream. Nice for getting to whole bore but tends to foam back into the action etc. They recommend using a bore guide or soda straw. I used a short stiff length of plastic tube to guide the stuff out of the can and into the bore from the breach. Always got a little on my hands - mostly used rubber gloves but not always. Washed hands immediately. No apparent ill efffects but again I wish I had a little better idea what I'm working with.

This rifle sits in an old model H-S Precision composite stock. Hope the Wipe Out doesn't attack the stock - but I think over the years, the Shooter's Choice and similar may have attacked it already. I'm saving for a new stock now.

This company has a family of products including Flush Out, and some special lubricants. I have'nt tried anything else. They can be found on line at:

Anyway FYI and comment. I'm not selling this stuff - just commenting and looking for other input. Thanks

I received the following comments regarding Wipeout

1  effect on metal finishes and plastics.

A:  No problem with any metal finishes or teflons.

2  corrosiveness and corrosion protection

A:  Wipe-Out is unlike some other products........we have no heavy solids which can leave residue which will bind, corrode, or prevent the normal action of any part. We also leave behind an anti-corrosive that lasts for more than 4 months.

I've had great luck with Wipe-Out, although I don't use it routinely. I save it for the really ugly jobs that I'll get around to sometime tomorrow

I have one concern that no one's been able to give me a straight answer on, however. The can says it dissolves aluminum fouling. First, how on Earth do you get aluminum gobbed in your bore? Secondly, and the basis of my concerns - will it attack aluminum rifle parts, like AR15 upper receivers? I needs to know!

I use it on everything from my 50 BMG to the .17HMR when they get really nasty and it works great! It'll probably work on the barbecue grill from what I've seen of it.

I just started using it. the first gun I used it on was my 1911 bbl. imagine my surprise when the foam shot across the living room

I havent heard anything about, just seen it at the sportsman wharehouse. I've used it on my 1911 and my whelen and so far it seems to work the same as other stuff I use but with alot less work and effort. Next guns I'm gonna use it on is my 45/70 and 338. I have shot cast and barnes through them (repectively) for years, thats where the real test is gonna come in.

There's a learning curve as far as getting it INSIDE the gun, I've discovered. I can tell you firsthand that it's an EXCELLENT garage-floor cleaner.

For better or worse, be advised that it won't touch lead fouling. Sez so right on the can.

For my expensive (very expensive!) match barrels, it minimizes the mileage my cleaning rods travel up and down the bores. Always a good thing. Kinda like the old scrubbing bubbles commercial, it just gets the goop out overnight so I don't have to.

Cheers
