Harton 45 Colt
« on: October 13, 2009, 10:13:30 AM »
Here are some pics of a Ruger Blackhawk 45 Colt done by Alan Harton.  It started out as a Blackhawk with a stainles Super Blackhawk hammer and grip frame.  The revolver also had rifle sights.

Alan did an awesome job on this gun.  Swapped the grip frame back to a steel Blackhawk grip frame, tuned and tightened the action, steel ejector rod housing, new gold bead front sight, Bowen rear, chamfered the cylinder, uniformed the cylinder throats, Belt Mountain base pin, rebarreled with a Douglas blank with a straight taper, reblued (rust blue) and CCH by Turnbul, and reshaped the grip frame and fitted the grip panels.  The grip panels are spalted maple from Pvt. Schultz on Ebay.

Don't know yet.  It's been raining every day since I got it late last week.  This weekend is looking clear so I hope to have a range report early next week.

Heavy, that's a very nice looking six-gun, I've shot off the windowsill of our P/U when the weather didn't cooperate. Anyway let us know when you can.

I've known Alan Harton for years. Worked with him ( he was a foreman in our shop) before he went into full-time gunsmithing.  He is a meticulous, highly skilled and honest craftsman. I've been to his shop and seen the amazing work he's doing.
I just can't imagine anyone could do better.
You should see the fine 5-shot .38 specials he makes out of 3-screw .22 single-six Rugers.

Well, I finally made it to the range yesterday to check out how she shoots.  All I had on hand was some Winchester factory cowboy loads.  Shot at 25 yards and managed 2.5" groups.  Not exactly thrilled with those results, but once I start rolling my own I'm sure that will improve.  Other than that the revolver handled very nice.  Perfect balance and the grip was very comfortable.

I have three Ruger single actions that I sent to Alan for work. He does a great job. Turn around time was good and they all shoot wonderfully well. Two in .45 Colt and one .41 Mag.

I got to shoot & handle some of the finest revolvers in the world this spring at Raton, New Mexico, we are blessed with the best revolver smiths on the planet, Alan Harton is possibly at the top of the pile, just my opinion.

Yep, I would agree.  When I look back at the 'before' pictures and see the finished product I'm simply amazed at what the man can do.

As I understand it some of the factory cowboy loads can be some real junk.  Right now I'm trying to decide on a bullet to reload as well as a powder.  Everybody seems to have their favorite.  I'm going to have to play around with it until I find something it likes.
