My avatar is a photograph of the 'Artillery Group' of the "Ulysses S. Grant Memorial" in Washington, D.C., that I got form an excellent website of the same title, the link of which I've posted below. Its just my opinion, or personal preference if you like, that this memorial (at least as far as the sculptures are concerned) is the finest of its kind in the world. I think this memorial represents a tribute to all the soldiers that participated in our Civil War, just as much as it serves as a symbolic tribute to U.S. Grant himself. The sculptor who created this memorial was named Henry Merwin Shrady; he won the competition held in 1902 to pick the sculptor of this work, and he died 15 days before the official dedication on April 27, 1922. That's all the history I'm going to give, because just about every aspect of this memorial's history is covered in this fine website. There are supposedly over 200 photographs to view, and if you click on "Full Size" while on any picture, you will get a high resolution enlargement of that photo.

Allen,

If you have been to DC and walked the mall to the Capitol building you walked right by it.  The problem with DC is that there are so many of these monuments your really don't realize what you are walking by.  I remember this one becasuse I made a point of seeing what it was.

I visited DC as a teen on a high school trip, and we did see the Capitol Bldg., Washington Monument, and Lincoln Memorial, but no Grant Memorial, even though its right there in the middle of these other historical landmarks. In reading some articles about Washington DC, its apparent that the Grant Memorial just doesn't have the importance, or appeal that these other attractions do. Some of the writers on this topic think the reason may be that U.S. Grant's presidency is regarded by historians as a dismal failure, (which it no doubt was) but this memorial is basically intended as a tribute to his reputation as the Commanding General of the Federal Army during the Civil War. Whatever the case may be, I think its a shame that more people don't know about this (in my opinion) incredible American work of art.
