Menus with pictures as a warning to stay away?
« on: October 02, 2009, 05:33:02 AM »
There's an old saying that restaurant menus with pictures of the food on them should be taken as a warning the the restaurant is no good. I believe there's some truth to that, but I can't say that I fully agree. Given two restaurants serving the same kind of food, generally the one without the pictures on the menu is the better of the two. At least in my experience. But it doesn't mean that the one with the pictures is bad.

The one exception I can think of is Chinese restaurants. There, I believe it is generally true that pictures on the menu are a bad sign.

What say you?

I eat out at three main restaurants, Longhorns, Red Lobster, and Olive Garden.  All have pictures on he menu, all are good.  Now, if you find a good mom and pop restaruant, I will go there also because sometimes they are really good.
