KP-1 300mag bbl will not close
« on: August 28, 2009, 10:44:33 AM »
Long story short here if I can,I recently recieved on a trade,an as new in box KP-1 in SS/black furniture with 50cal,45-70 and 300mag. Aside from the usual take it apart and see what makes it tick  ;D.... and after inspection,it is as new in box,no scratches and very clean etc.. BUT..when trying to install the 300mag bbl, after inserting the pin, when you try to close it, the extractor rides against the fireing pin area and as it does that, the extractor compresses the spring and that little cross bar thing..(don't laugh) but that cross bar "thing" is supposed to just miss 2 latches farther down in the reciever body. Well, they make enough contact, that it will not allow me to close the breach. Now those of you who own a KP-1,would you please have a look see at your rifle and let me know if my assumption is correct or not......I think that the face of the extractor is too thick (out of tollerance) and could be filed, sanded etc  down a few thousandths to correct this problem. The rifle setup is out of warrenty as I am the second owner and do not wish to send it out for this simple (I think) problem. Even the local smith will charge more than I can afford at this time as work is failing sadly this year. A penny for your thoughts would be apreciated.

Try this (mon-fri) 1-800-696-1703 Ext 2126  .

Hopefully that number will reach Gordie Edwards at Knight.

Gordy will take care of you, and yes I have seen this problem before. Your assumption about the plate being to thick is correct. I had a similar issue and spoke with him about it. He told me that he could send me a thinner plate or do as you suggested and file it thinner. Lucky for me I had two receivers and it fit "as is" on the other one. So I chose not to worry about it.

I have a call in to Mr. Edwards and slowfog thank you for your insight sir. I'm gonna see if 1),I should *file* some from the extractor where it hits the face by the fireing pin area, or 2), remove some from that cross bar. Before using a mocrometer it looks like about 1/16th of an inch needs to be removed from the cross bar. Will see what Mr. Edwards suggests and report back.

This is an update as too what actions have been taken to this point......none. LOL....I called and left a message with Mr. Edwards,he returned my call and left a message. It seems my work hrs and his do not jive very well. I am hoping to get a rain day so we can deal with this already as it has been frustrating. I,in the meantime,am going to swap the extractor from the 45/70 bbl to the 300 mag bbl and see what happens....if it's just a matter of that,I may just leave it at that for now. Hunting season is too close to be shipping bbls out. Will update if we connect and post here.
