Native American Vets
« on: October 05, 2009, 04:13:01 PM »
Last Saturday my wife and I went out to Watson Lake in Prescott  Arizona to take in a small indian (social) powwow.  Not that large an affair but a lot of Vets in colors they were extremely proud of.  Robes covered in military decorations mostly Army-Marine with unit insignia and places served worn by individuals who at times also carried Eagle feather fans and turtle rattles,  Harley jackets with tribal markings and unit shields from WWII to Afghanistan.  My wife was looking at some touruquoise when they brought out the colors.  Color guard was four guys in combat fatigues from four generations, flanked by what appeared to be spear carrieres in tribal costume.  They didn't just present the colors, they danced them.  They continued to dance them with rifles at port arms for the next (?) hour while fully costumed Native Americans joined in groups from the four corners of the compass.  I had my hat off and stood enthralled by the sheer sincerety, pride and joy of that colorgaurd.  I looked back around me and the drums and singing had people outside the dance enclosure dancing and keeping time.  Not that many people there at the time but enough vets proudly wearing thier colors to make a short company.  They were there with joy and pride to teach thier youth how to set up and run a powwow.  They reminded me to take pride in my service.
