Going back out Sunday
« on: September 09, 2009, 07:56:59 PM »
Going back out Sunday, going to be sitting on three gut piles.  Looking for anything that comes close to them.  One pile is 250 yards, second one is 340 yards, and third is 380 yards from camp site.  Camp is behind a line of brush, overlooking a meadow below.  Just enough elevation to give good visibility.  We'll see how it goes.  Taking my .223, 30-06, and 338/378 Weatherby.

Good luck to you. Sounds like a great opportunity. Post pics if you connect - and the story too. Like to read your adventures.  I've got the boat partly loaded and plan to head out Friday to hopefully create a gut pile. My 11 yr old convinced me he is tough enough to go too.  Just hope he can be quiet and sit still.  He's got great eyes though and they may be a big help to me. So I won't push too hard will hope for a moose.

Might let him carry the 30-30 but he really isn't ready tho he kept 3 shots in 3-4 inches at 50 yds. the other day. Wish he'd practiced more this summer when I offered.   Sure wish our caribou herd was still strong- that would be a better start for him.  I took my first moose with this gun so we'll see what opportunities present and I'll be carrying the 300 win mag. Being responsible and safe are the #1 priorities.

We'll even be wearing orange. Think it helped already this fall when I was sneaking down a slough and 3 teens in a boat came drifting around the corner. They knew what I was right away and seemed a bit startled.

We'll take a shotgun for grouse and ducks as well. Have bear tags but I'm not sure I want to mess with those stinkers unless I have to or have a moose hanging.

Dand,

I know what you mean about getting kids to practice at the range. When you find the answer, let me know. My son is the same way. For now, I just limit his distance based on how well he did or didn't perform at the range. It's a fine line in keeping a youngster proficient enough to hunt, but not being overbearing then pushing him away.

Good luck out there.

KP, Just a thought.  Instead of shooting paper, take some clay targets out there and let him shoot them.  Seeing something explode when he hits it really makes a differance.  When Sky and Eric was about your son's age they started shooting clay targets and thought that was a real kick.  They started with a .22 at 50 yards.  Then they moved out to 100, then 125, then 150.  That's when they decided to go to centerfire.  Next thing I knew they were shooting off the bank at Cushman with .223s and my .17HMR.  That's 337 yards.

Of course a little rivalry there helped as well.

500+ yards!!!!!!!!  Wow you are into long distance. Good for you but I wouldn't trust myself that far at all. Is there more to the story? I need some adventure stories. I only bagged 3 smallish truck loads of birch this weekend - this is when the Ridgeline doesn't seem like a real truck.

What caliber did you use? Those photos are pretty but man, I admire your marksmanship.

Dand, it's not real hard.  Shooting at long distance is a matter of learning where the bullet hits at what ranges.  What you then want to kill at that range dictates what gun and bullet you use.

Foxes, or other small fur bearers a .223 with 52gr or heavier bullets works well.

Wolves, I like my 30-06.  165gr bullet and I can hit a wolf out to 700 yards.  For Caribou I like a 180gr bullet

Moose and bears, I like to use my Weatherby .338/378.  Right now 800 yards is my limit simply because I have not practiced at farther yardages yet.

At 600 yards your heart beat moves the crosshairs 5 to 6 feet.  Timing then becomes a part of the equation.
